About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Safety & Training Manager to lead and continuously improve our safety culture and driver training programs. This role is critical to ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while developing, coaching, and supporting frontline teams to operate safely and professionally every day. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in transportation safety, regulatory compliance, and employee training, along with the ability to influence across operations, maintenance, and leadership teams.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Active Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) endorsement held for a minimum of five (5) years.
  • Minimum 3 years of safety & training management experience in transit or transportation (fixed-route, shuttle, or paratransit preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of DOT, FTA, OSHA, and state PUC safety regulations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with drivers, union representatives, clients, and senior leaders.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for travel within the service area.
  • Ability to travel regionally (up to 50%).
  • Ability to maintain consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Fluency in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Transportation Management, Risk Management, or related field preferred.
  • Certifications such as OSHA 30-Hour, Smith System, or Transit Safety and Security Program (TSSP) preferred.
  • 5+ years of safety & training management experience in transit or transportation (fixed-route, shuttle, or paratransit preferred)
  • Experience conducting accident investigations and safety analytics.
  • Prior work in a unionized environment.
  • Paratransit industry experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee all location’s safety programs, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, CDL, DOT, and other applicable regulations.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for safety, environmental, and driver compliance requirements.
  • Oversee drug and alcohol compliance programs for all divisions and locations.
  • Provide direction and guidance to driver trainers and safety staff.
  • Develop, deliver, and monitor classroom and field training programs, including recurring certification and retraining.
  • Conduct driver coaching, post-accident counseling, and remedial training as needed.
  • Lead investigations of accidents, incidents, and work-related injuries.
  • Determine preventability and fault based on facts and regulatory guidance.
  • Prepare accident reports, maintain records, and coordinate with claims offices and adjusters.
  • Maintain compliance documentation and enter required data into systems (e.g., DMO).
  • Plan and lead monthly safety meetings aligned with company and regional goals.
  • Facilitate Safety Action Team meetings and accident review committees.
  • Promote a strong, consistent safety culture that emphasizes teamwork and shared responsibility.
  • Supervise safety and training staff, including hiring, training, performance management, and discipline.
  • Analyze safety trends, prepare reports, and develop cost-saving and risk-reduction recommendations.
  • Complete special projects and additional duties as assigned.
