About The Position

The Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing and supporting the organizations safety and environmental programs that include performing accident investigations, root cause analysis, training, auditing and reporting.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in occupational safety, Health & Environment or related field
  • 3 years of railroad safety or railroad operations experience in an FRA regulated environment required
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations applicable to employee safety and occupational health and environmental protection
  • Ability to interact constructively and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with external stakeholders and employees at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and take appropriate action
  • Proficiency in software applications required for analyzing, monitoring, reporting and presentations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work with a diverse group
  • Must be available 24 hours/7 days a week with the ability to work evenings and weekends as a normal course of business
  • Must possess a valid state drivers license
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug and alcohol screening and be willing to comply with the DTO Drug and Alcohol Policy

Nice To Haves

  • CSP, ASP, CIH or CSHM certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of the Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility (CRMF), rail stations, and other work sites to ensure adherence to safety regulations and company policies, ensuring both employees and contractors remain in full compliance.
  • Be on call, respond to incidents and investigate incidents/accidents to determine root causes, identify corrective actions and prepare required reports
  • Conduct job safety analysis to identify hazards and develop safe work practices and procedures
  • Develop and implement training programs for employees on safety practices and procedures
  • Complete audits and maintain accurate detailed records and documentation of safety activities, training and policies.
  • Input, Review and Categorize operational data to identify trends and develop target areas for improvement
  • Provide safety and security training for employees and contractors on various programs, including but not limited to, CRMF Orientation, Look Up & Live, Hazardous Communications, Fall Protection, Transit Security courses.
  • Act as the designated Safety liaison and technical subject matter resource supporting the Vehicle Maintenance Department.
  • Participate in Operation Lifesaver, Rail Safety Week, Construction Safety week and National Safety Month as directed.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned
