About The Position

The Safety Specialist is responsible for assisting in developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs to ensure a working and safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. The Safety Specialist serves as a member of the Safety Committee, assists in ensuring compliance and minimize risk in the Environment of Care (EOC) through Safety Survey Rounds, and supports the organizations Emergency Management program. Participates in policy and procedure updates and implementation. This role involves compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This position will report to our Atwater site. Schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm. Compensation: $24.31 - $25.53 an hour

Requirements

  • Strong analytical skills needed with demonstrated ability to interpret data trends and develop the necessary action plans.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both oral and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of MS word, excel and power point.
  • Must be able to research and implement new programs to improve safety policies, programs, and procedures.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a community healthcare or related safety role.
  • Valid California driver’s license, proof of insurance and acceptable driving record required.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Joint Commission, CMS, HRSA, and emergency preparedness/healthcare coalitions is preferred.
  • Experience presenting to, and training both small and large groups preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing, implementing, maintaining, and updating policies and procedures aligned with regulatory standards (Joint Commission, NFPA, OSHA, etc.).
  • Assists in monitoring and managing the organization’s compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Develop educational materials and resources to promote a culture of safety.
  • Conducts Safety Survey Rounds across all facilities.
  • Investigate safety incidents, near misses, and compose reports and recommend action plans to prevent recurrence, under the supervision of the Lead Environmental Safety Specialist
  • Assist with life safety compliance, including fire systems, alarm testing, and evacuation plans.
  • Oversees GVHC’s hazardous materials/waste management program, under the supervision of the Lead Environmental Safety Specialist.
  • Coordinate emergency drills and exercises to prepare staff for various scenarios (e.g., active shooter events, fire, child abduction, chemical spill), under the supervision of…
  • Assists in developing and updating the organization’s Emergency Management Plan.
  • Serve as a liaison with local healthcare coalitions for emergency preparedness.
  • Help oversee the security and safety management of keypad entry locks for doors, including providing and disabling alarm code/door access to GVHC staff as requested.
  • Supports and collaborates with the Facilities Department to address physical safety concerns.
  • Helps oversee GVHC’s Key Management Program by providing keys to, and collect keys from GVHC staff in accordance with the policy, under the supervision of the Lead Environmental Safety Specialist.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and problem solving.
  • Travel to other sites as needed.
  • Review and revise processes for efficiency.
  • Assist in burglar/fire alarm calls and alarm security equipment repairs with the organization’s fire/security monitoring vendor.
