About The Position

Malanai LLC is recruiting a Safety Specialist to support the US Department of Transportation (DOT) National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA's) Office of Vehicle Safety and Compliance (OVSC). This role supports OVSC’s mission to ensure that motor vehicles and regulated equipment comply with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), thereby reducing vehicle-related fatalities and injuries and enhancing roadway safety. The Safety Specialist uses applied automotive and engineering knowledge to support compliance testing, inspection programs, data analysis and process improvement initiatives. The position interfaces with multiple OVSC divisions, supporting compliance investigations, test procedure development, documentation, and reporting activities. This role requires the ability to work independently across programs while maintaining consistent coordination with OVSC staff and leadership.

  • Strong automotive, engineering, or technical background, or comparable experience supporting vehicle safety or compliance programs.
  • Experience with vehicle inspections, testing, data analysis, or regulatory compliance support preferred.
  • Ability to interpret and apply FMVSS requirements and technical standards.
  • Strong analytical, documentation and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to support multiple OVSC divisions simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and consistency.
  • Proficiency with data analytics tools, spreadsheets, and technical reporting.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work in regulated, process-riven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide cross-division technical and analytical support to OVSC compliance, testing, and inspection programs.
  • Apply automotive engineering knowledge to support the development, execution, and evaluation of annual vehicle and equipment inspection program.
  • Assist with the execution of compliance and inspection activities, including conducting field work, vehicle inspections, and drafting technical test and inspection reports.
  • Support the development, review and refinement of vehicle and equipment test procedures in alignment with FVMSS requirements and industry best practices.
  • Review test reports and compliance documentation to assess conformity with applicable safety standards.
  • Perform data analysis on compliance and inspection data to identify trends, risk, and potential noncompliance issues across OVSC programs.
  • Analyze emerging technologies and compliance data to support program planning and reporting to OVSC leadership.
  • Collaborate with OVSC engineering, investigators, program manager, and analyst to ensure consistent technical support across enforcement, testing, and compliance activities.
