About The Position

DPS HR's Safety Office is currently accepting applications for a Safety Consultant. This is a REPOST. Previous applicants MUST REAPPLY to be considered. The primary purpose of this position is to provide safety and environmental health technical services and consultation to all subsets of the department within the Western half of the State. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is one of the largest agencies in the state with resultant diversity and complexities that require meeting a large variety of regulations, rules and requirements for safety and environmental health issues. The Safety Consultant is responsible for independently scheduling, conducting and reporting annually on the results of site inspections of Juvenile Justice facilities, Juvenile Justice court services operations and other department office locations in the Western and Piedmont areas of North Carolina as well as some Central locations. The position will apply in-depth knowledge of OSHA standards, NFPA standards, N.C. State Building Codes and other applicable regulations to the job. The position will support the Western and Piedmont areas as well as some Central locations in North Carolina. The position is expected to report to a designated office location at least 1 day/week (Raleigh, NC or Concord, NC) and will be traveling daily to various facilities/sites for the remainder of the week. Daily travel is required, including weekly travel out of town and occasional overnight stays. The Safety Consultant must be willing to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the agency. This will require periodically accommodating emergency situations or special requests as they occur. The Safety Consultant is also responsible for meeting deadlines on critical emergency projects which may require working beyond normal hours. Job duties for this position require driving a state vehicle which will be provided. A valid driver's license must be obtained by date of hire.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in safety engineering, industrial engineering, industrial management or technology, occupational safety, or one of the physical sciences or an equivalent technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of three years of progressive occupational and safety and health experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience investigating incidents and/or injuries involving acts of violence.
  • Experience developing and/or delivering safety-related training using Cornerstone LMS.
  • Experience writing reports with recommendations referencing federal and/or state safety codes/regulations.
  • Experience inspecting a site for health, safety and/or security concerns according to OSHA, NFPA and/or ACA regulations/standards.
  • Experience performing periodic surveillance and/or acting as a designated person for an AHERA management plan.

Responsibilities

  • Aiding field personnel through interpretation of regulations and standards.
  • Providing technical advice to field personnel through research and consultation with appropriate authorities.
  • Conducting investigations of serious accidents, incidents and property loss and preparing analytical reports/recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
  • Developing and conducting safety and health related training and policies.
  • Participating in safety committee meetings and providing safety management guidance to the field.
