About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Director, Safety Compliance, the Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring the regulatory compliance of the safety program. The Safety Specialist anticipates, recognizes, evaluates, and controls hazards enhancing the health and safety of all InnovAge employees through the careful management of all risks at InnovAge. This position serves as the subject matter expert in EHS and is responsible for implementing and executing environmental and safety programs that effectively lead the safety culture at InnovAge. This position is responsible for providing sound leadership and management to safety and environmental programs to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and/or local Environmental, Health and Safety legislation. Essential Functions and Work Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Requires state issued driver’s license, personal transportation, good driving record and auto insurance as required by law, and the ability to travel
  • Minimum four (4) years healthcare safety experience is required
  • Candidate must possess working knowledge of OSHA compliance, hazardous material handling, and healthcare safety.
  • Previous experience and proven ability to effectively train/educate adult learners individually, small groups, and large groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience managing projects.
  • Superior customer service skills and orientation
  • Strong verbal and written (report) communications skills and presentation skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism at all times under stressful situations
  • Ability to plan and manage work under time constraints
  • Strong judgment, problem-solving and crisis management skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and collaborative style.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree Environmental Health and Safety or related field
  • Board certification as a Safety Professional is preferred
  • Four (4) years of healthcare safety and transportation safety experience.
  • Working knowledge of DOT guidelines and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining the Safety related policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State and Local regulations and standards.
  • Conducts Safety compliance audits at InnovAge facilities ensuring adherence to InnovAge policies and applicable Federal, State and Local regulations and standards.
  • Observes work practices/tasks and reports hazardous conditions to Safety Coordinators to be addressed within the Job Safety Analysis program.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining an enterprise-wide safe patient handling (SPH) program.
  • Analyzes data to recognize trends in work-related injuries/illnesses and assessing risks.
  • Supports and instructs facility-based Safety Coordinators and their Committees that are responsible for activities such as training, inspections, and general safety in a pro-active approach to prevent injuries at each InnovAge facility.
  • Keeps abreast of pending regulatory developments and potential impact to operations and makes changes to policies and processes.
  • Ensures appropriate sampling and monitoring measures are conducted for all exposure type events, ensuring a safe work environment is maintained and/or restored quickly following an incident.
  • Monitor safety reporting for accidents and injuries. Review employees' accident/injury histories and target issues identified as causal factors.
  • Provide assistance with post-accident and post-injury investigations to ensure proper completion of required documentation and reporting to the proper agencies.
  • Monitors expenditures in order to meet budget goals.
  • Immediately stops a process that jeopardizes safety.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Ensures that all local, State, and Federal safety and education requirements for InnovAge and its affiliates are met, in regards to safety requirements and laws.
  • Develops individualized safety training to address unique training needs throughout InnovAge operations.
  • Conducts or organizes training sessions in areas such as; ergonomics, chemical handling, hazardous wastes, regulations, investigations, defensive driving, and other areas as needed.
  • Provides observation and instruction to staff and supervisors, ensuring Safety policies are properly implemented.
  • Performs need analysis studies in order to ensure the effectiveness of orientation and other education needs within scope of the InnovAge Safety area.
  • Ensures designated supervisors/safety coordinators/trainers are properly trained, qualified, and/or certified to conduct Safety trainings per policy.
  • Evaluates and reports on the effectiveness of education efforts, and makes changes as requested.
  • Communicates frequently with the supervisors of trainees in regards to the progress and abilities of trainees.
  • Selects and/or develops testing and evaluation procedures to be used to ensure training/education competency.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the quality improvement process and the philosophy of continuous improvement; identifies and responds actively and with sensitivity to the needs of all concerned; participates as a team player in all phases of the organization; and is open and responsive to change.
  • Communicates and interacts with co-workers and all others in a pleasant and professional manner at all times.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of personnel data, proprietary information, and sensitive materials as required.
  • Maximizes cost efficiency and productivity in the use of all resources of the department and organization.
  • Attends all required department events, staff meetings, and any other job-related functions. Attends and successfully completes all mandatory trainings.
  • Does not communicate with any news media or volunteer business information to other agencies. Directs public relations issues to the appropriate person.
  • Does not enter into any contract without approval which commits the organization to any obligation, or which transfers company assets to any outside interests, or which involve expenditures of a capital nature.
