About The Position

This position is considered a field position and will not be required to report into a physical office on daily basis but based on operational need. What You'll Be Doing: Conduct on-site safety inspections of public employer workplaces across Ohio to identify hazardous conditions and ensure compliance with Ohio Revised Code and Administrative Code Chapter 4167. Investigate serious workplace incidents, including fatalities, hospitalizations, and imminent danger situations, and prepare detailed reports with citations and abatement recommendations. Use industrial hygiene instruments (e.g., noise dosimeters, gas monitors, IAQ monitors) to assess environmental exposures and refer complex cases for further evaluation. Provide technical guidance and compliance assistance to public employers, employees, and stakeholders on occupational safety standards, hazard abatement, and program development. Mentor new officers and review reports for accuracy and quality, while also supporting legal proceedings and promoting workplace safety through outreach and training initiatives.

Requirements

  • 12 mos. exp. in advisory or consultative capacity in field of industrial or environmental health & safety program development & education AND 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in public relations AND 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. in interviewing principles & techniques AND valid driver's license, except in Ohio Department of Job & Family Services, must provide own transportation for travel & required automobile insurance coverage pursuant to Section 4509.51 of Revised Code as needed.
  • Or completion of undergraduate core program in natural sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology) AND 12 mos. trg. or 12 mos. exp. in industrial or environmental health & safety principles, practices & regulations AND 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in public relations AND 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. in interviewing principles & techniques AND valid driver's license, except in Ohio Department of Job & Family Services, must provide own transportation for travel & required automobile insurance coverage pursuant to Section 4509.51 of Revised Code as needed.
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
  • Twelve (12) months experience citing, interpreting & applying Industrial Health & Safety Principles, practices & regulations.
  • Twelve (12) months experience citing, interpreting & applying the 1910, 1926 & 1928 OSHA Standards.
  • Twelve (12) months experience citing, interpreting & applying OSHA & State safety & health regulations.
  • Knowledge of: (1)Industrial Health & Safety Principles, practices & regulations; (2)1910, 1926 & 1928 OSHA Standards, (3)Consensus Standards (e.g., ANSI, NEC, NFPA), (4)state laws, rules & regulations, (5)public relations, (6)PERRP Program Procedures, (7)Agency policies & procedures, (8)Divisional procedures, (10)research techniques, (11)Natural sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology) & physical science or engineering, (12)investigative techniques, (13)management principles & techniques;
  • Skill in: (1)use of Personal Computer & peripheral equipment (e.g., fax, scanner), (2)use of MS Office software (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), (3)citing, interpreting & applying OSHA & state safety & health regulations, (4)citing, interpreting & applying Consensus Standards (e.g., ANSI, NFPA, NEC), (5)technical writing, (6)conducting studies & performing research on industrial or environmental health & safety hazards, (7)interpersonal communication skills (listening, writing, reading, body language), (8)use of common direct reading devices (e.g., sound level meter and dosimeters, colorimetric detector tubes, velometer, electrical circuit testers & similar instruments), (9)use of PERRP computer application, (10)addressing various audiences & adaptation to those audiences, (11)handling multiple projects & prioritizing based on many variables;
  • Ability to: (1)define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid conclusions, (2)prepare survey &/or gather, collate & classify data maintain accurate records, (3)use proper research methods in gathering data, (4)use statistical analysis, (5)recognize safety hazards, (6)prepare accurate & concise records/reports, (7)handle sensitive inquiries from & contacts with employers, government officials, & general public, (8)prepare & deliver technical speeches &/or reports for specialized audiences, employers & the general public & communicate technical data both verbally & in writing to internal & external customers, (9)work in a non office setting (e.g., field, office, employer location), (10)coordinate use of time & resources (e.g., meet schedules, appointments & deadlines), (11)address multiple issues at employer sites, (12)comprehend a variety of complex technical written material & incorporate into recommendations & findings that are either verbal or in writing, (13)resolve complaints from angry citizens & government officials, (14)handle routine & sensitive contacts with & inquiries from employers, other government employees, & the general public, (15)market products or services to various levels within an organization; (16)travel throughout State of Ohio, (17)conduct accident causations, (18)portray attitudes & actions which perpetuate good working relationships & acceptable public image, (19)work independently (e.g., interacting with various positions from peers to governmental agency heads), (20)be consistent, dependable & accurate in carrying out responsibilities to a successful conclusion.
