About The Position

The Rustic Trail Specialist is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of rustic structures, trails, and related outdoor infrastructure. This role performs skilled carpentry, trail building, and general maintenance work in outdoor environments, ensuring facilities are safe, functional, and consistent with the Mohonk Mountain House’s historic and aesthetic standards. The position may lead assigned laborers and assist with emergency repairs and seasonal operations.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License and at least 21 years of age, or 20 years of age with at least two years of licensed driving experience.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and construct trails, rock scrambles, pedestrian bridges, railings, fences, docks, stairs, summerhouses, barriers, benches, retaining walls, trellises, walls, and gates.
  • Perform carpentry and woodworking using hand and power tools.
  • Operate heavy equipment including trucks, tractors, trailers, skid steers, and utility vehicles; build and repair roads, trails, fences, and related infrastructure.
  • Perform tree cutting, clearing, pruning, and hazard tree identification.
  • Maintain drainage systems and repair culverts and retaining structures using hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment.
  • Conduct inspections and document the condition of trails, railings, and structures.
  • Assist in sawmill operations and material preparation.
  • Participate in snow and ice removal and emergency storm recovery operations.
  • Lead and direct rustic laborers during assigned projects.
  • Communicate work status, safety concerns, and project updates verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain safe work practices and comply with property standards and policies.
  • Measure and assess worksite dimensions; lay out railing and structure lines and mark post locations according to drawings, specifications, and instructions.
  • Excavate holes and trenches using hand tools and power-driven equipment as required.
  • Install and secure metal and wooden posts in designated locations.
  • Prepare, mix, and place concrete or compact soil to properly set and stabilize posts.
  • Fabricate fence rails by cutting lumber or metal tubing to required specifications.
  • Maintain advanced carpentry skills and serve as lead on rustic railing construction and repair projects.
  • Perform vegetation management, including pruning, clearing, and weed trimming within view sheds, along railings, and around summerhouses.
  • Assemble and install gates using hand and power tools.
  • Operate and maintain hand and power tools, including chainsaws, log splitters, saws, sanders, paint sprayers, drills, impact drivers, and related equipment in a safe manner.
  • Assist with tasks in and around the sawmill in a safe manner.
  • Repair and refinish wooden and metal rowboats as needed.
  • Develop and apply basic rock and masonry skills for repair of stairs, walls, and foundations.
  • Identify hazardous trees along the trail system and report or mitigate risks as appropriate.
  • Read and comprehend technical manuals, drawings, and diagrams.
  • Perform snow and ice removal using plows, salt/sand spreaders, skid steers, shovels, snow blowers, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Drive automatic and manual transmission vehicles in a safe and legal manner.
  • Cut, fell, and clear trees and transport lumber/logs as required.
  • Lift up to 75 pounds and perform physically demanding outdoor work, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions.
  • Walk long distances over uneven terrain and perform repetitive physical tasks.
  • Work at heights of up to 200 feet, including on ladders, scaffolding, and elevated structures.
  • Requires frequent use of both hands to lift, carry, examine, and manipulate objects weighing up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting up to 75 pounds with assistance, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Perform work in a manner that does not endanger self, co-workers, guests, or property.
  • Learn and utilize new methods, materials, procedures, and systems as required.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor under challenging conditions with guests and co-workers.
  • Work productively and efficiently with or without direct supervision when performing routine tasks.

  • Learn and demonstrate Mohonk Mountain House Service Steps and Service Strategies when interacting with guests and staff.
  • Learn and retain knowledge of historical facts and information about Mohonk Mountain House.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and peak business periods; be available on short notice for emergency repairs and storm damage recovery.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and other departments.
  • Inspect work by touch, sight, sound, and smell to ensure conformance with prescribed standards.
  • Speak, read, and write English; communicate clearly with guests, visitors, and employees; hear and respond to verbal instructions, directions, and warnings.
  • Reach with hands and arms; bend, kneel, stoop, twist, and flex arms; walk stairs and inclines; sit, stand, and/or climb ladders for extended periods (up to 5 hours at a time).
  • Lift up to 75 pounds from ground level to shoulder height and carry up to 30 feet, with or without assistance; walk up to 15 miles per day over varied terrain.
  • Maneuver carts, dollies, and/or wheelbarrows with loads up to 200 pounds over stairs, inclines, uneven terrain, and distances up to 250 feet.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Maintain close, distance, and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Act calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Analyze problems and develop and implement appropriate corrective action plans.
