The Novelis team has an exciting opportunity for a Grinder Operator in the Roll Shop of the Bay Minette facility in Alabama. This role will report to the Operations Leader Roll Shop of the Cold Mill Manufacturing Unit. The primary focus of this position is to operate any of the three roll grinding machines and produce high quality ground rolls in strict compliance with our quality standards. In addition, the Grinder Operator takes part in adapting, developing and adjusting the roll grinding and inspection procedures, working closely with the Operations Leader and Process Engineering. Furthermore, the Grinder Operators will be introduced to all other functions and operations in the Roll Shop, and be the mentors for training new members of our growing team. Successful candidates are fast learners and self-motivated, independent workers. They will have the ability to work under pressure and the willingness to work in varying conditions. Grinder Operators will receive specialized training on all aspects of the grinding process and surrounding Roll Shop operations.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma/GED
  • 5 years of experience as a machinist, in a machine shop environment, or another Roll Shop in a metals rolling mill
  • Familiar with safety of industrial cranes, mobile equipment, working at heights, confined space and machine safeguarding.
  • Rigging experience with slings, ideally for heavy parts
  • Experience with machine tools, including lathes, OD grinders or, ideally, large roll grinders
  • Ability to read and understand procedures and work instructions, familiarity with the practical implementation of processes, ideally in a WCM-style
  • Written and oral communication skills, good computer skills.
  • Maintain detailed records of operational activities, documenting and communicating all relevant aspects of the process
  • Basic familiarity with abrasives and grinding processes
  • Able to use micrometer screws, calipers, pi tapes and other mechanical precision measurement tools both digital and analog to identify issues and provide basic adjustments as
  • Experience with non-destructive material inspection
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, off-shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed to support continuous operations.
  • Basic hand and power tools use and safety experience.
  • Allowed to legally work in the United States of America – Work Visa sponsorship is not available for this position

Nice To Haves

  • Actual roll grinder operator experience from a metals rolling mill, hot or cold mill roll shop
  • Familiarity with SAP work order system
  • Experience with machine vibrations
  • Experience working with TPM/WCM or continuous improvement
  • Experience driving mobile equipment such as small cranes, lifts, fork trucks
  • Experience with running overhead cranes, and in particular precision placement in the scope machine switchovers

  • Read and interpret Procedures, Work Instructions, Equipment Manuals and Product Specifications to perform required tasks
  • With a high degree of ownership, identify problems, make adjustments and coordinate developing solutions with the roll shop operations, process and maintenance team
  • Have the ability to maintain and or report inventory for all production, equipment, and safety purposes
  • Share information and knowledge within the roll shop team and facilitate knowledge sharing and learning across the shifts and with dayshift support team
  • Train and mentor new team members and develop the roll shop further in regards to Safety, Quality and Output
