Robotics Software Engineering Intern

Agility RoboticsPittsburgh, PA
23h$55 - $55Onsite

About The Position

We are looking for a graduate-level Robotics Software Engineering Intern to join our Skills team at Agility Robotics. This role is focused on developing robot behaviors that are robust, reusable, and easier to generalize across tasks and robot platforms. You will work on hands-on robotics problems at the intersection of behavior planning, software integration, and robot execution, with opportunities to validate your work in both simulation and on hardware.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. in Robotics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a focus on robotics
  • Comfortable programming in Python (experience with C++ is a plus)
  • Excited about building real robot behaviors, not just running simulations
  • Interested in behavior planning, robotics software architecture, and systems integration
  • Familiar with robotics concepts such as manipulation, motion planning, computer vision, navigation, kinematics, and control
  • Curious, hands-on, and motivated to understand why robots fail in the real world
  • This is an onsite internship at our office in Pittsburgh, PA - minimum 4 days/week onsite.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to robotics middleware such as ROS
  • Exposure to motion planning frameworks such as MoveIt
  • Experience with simulation tools used in robotics development (Gazebo, Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, PyBullet)
  • Experience designing and building ROS drivers or interfaces for robot hardware
  • Experience testing or debugging autonomous systems on real robots
  • Familiarity with behavior trees, state machines, task planning, or related execution frameworks
  • Prior internship, research, or project experience involving physical robotic systems

Responsibilities

  • Help develop and maintain robot behaviors used in real-world workflows
  • Prototype and evaluate new behavior planning strategies or execution logic
  • Apply ideas from your academic research or prior projects to explore improvements in behavior design, robustness, or performance
  • Collaborate closely with full-time engineers to translate experimental ideas into production-quality robotics software
  • Contribute to software interfaces and abstractions that make robotics behaviors more modular and reusable
  • Analyze logs and failures to diagnose behavior and system issues
  • Run experiments in simulation and on hardware to evaluate behavior performance
