About The Position

Planned Systems International (PSI) is an Enterprise IT services company who focuses on designing, building, securing, and operating cutting-edge software solutions that drive mission success and operational excellence for Federal Government organizations. PSI is currently seeking a Robotics Engineering Intern for Summer 2026 to support the design, development, testing, and integration of robotic systems and automation solutions. Working alongside experienced engineers, the intern will contribute to hands-on projects focused on mechanical design, sensors, controls, embedded systems, and system validation. This role is ideal for a student who is eager to apply classroom knowledge to real-world robotics challenges.

Requirements

  • Must be a rising Junior or Senior pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with at least one robotics or embedded platform such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ROS, mobile robots, or manipulators
  • Exposure to sensors (e.g., cameras, LiDAR, encoders) and basic signal concepts
  • Ability to read schematics, mechanical drawings, or wiring diagrams (academic or project experience acceptable)
  • Foundational knowledge in robotics, control systems, or electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo) or circuit design tools.
  • Basic coding skills in Python, C/C++, or MATLAB.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative engineering team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robotics platforms (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ROS, mobile robots, manipulators).
  • Familiarity with sensors such as LiDAR, cameras, encoders, or proximity sensors.
  • Coursework in robotics, mechatronics, dynamics, embedded systems, or machine learning.
  • Familiarity with controls concepts (PID, kinematics, basic dynamics).
  • Experience working with Linux, Git, or basic CI workflows.
  • Coursework or projects in robotics, mechatronics, computer vision, or embedded systems.
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2, simulation tools, or hardware-in-the-loop testing.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and prototyping of robotic components, subsystems, and mechanisms.
  • Assist in the programming, testing, and debugging of robotic control systems using Python, C/C++, ROS, or MATLAB/Simulink
  • Conduct sensor integration and perform data acquisition for perception and automation tasks.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and software issues.
  • Participate in system-level testing, calibration, documentation, and performance analysis.
  • Prepare technical reports, CAD models, test results, and presentations as needed.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and engineering best practices in lab and shop environments.
