Job Responsibilities: This is a research internship position within the Advanced Robotics team in the Corporate Engineering and R&D department. The team focuses on developing innovative technologies that enable robots with human-like perception and dexterity. The candidate will design and develop simulation pipelines for robot controller design and will have the opportunity to work under the guidance of a Motion Planning & Controls Technical Specialist. The Magna Student Program provides students with practical work experience related to the automotive industry.

Requirements

  • Understanding of control theory and implementation of control algorithms for robotic manipulation tasks.
  • Prior experience with ROS 2, including control messages and plugins.
  • Knowledge of collision physics and dynamics for contact-rich manipulation.
  • Ability to use physics models for contact-based manipulation tasks.
  • Proficiency in coding and scripting in Python, C++, and ROS 2.
  • Experience with simulation tools such as Webots, Mujoco, Drake, CopelliaSim, NVIDIA Isaac Sim, Gazebo.
  • Strong understanding of robotics fundamentals.
  • Curious, collaborative team player with the ability to thrive in a small team environment.
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s or PhD), preferably focusing on Robotics, Controls, or Motion Planning for manipulators.
  • Ability to sit or stand comfortably for extended periods in an office environment (e.g., Holly, MI).
  • Able to conduct work on a computer with normal movement and mobility.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a ROS 2-based robotic simulation pipeline for controller design.
  • Create case studies to understand system capabilities and limitations.
  • Develop, modify, and implement software packages for practical applications.
  • Create evaluation criteria to test and assess system effectiveness.
  • Support robotic controller testing on real robots.
  • Present technical results and provide recommendations based on case studies.
