About The Position

Thurston County Public Works is recruiting for a Crew Chief to join our dynamic, energetic, and innovative Road Operations team. The successful candidate will direct the work of one or more road division crews by establishing work priorities, analyzing work requirements and determining procedures and methods. A division crew may include road maintenance, vegetation management, another functional area assigned by management. This position recommends and assists in the preparation of annual work projections and provides input and information to the budget and will receive general supervision from the Road Operations Supervisors and Manager. Essential Personnel: This position is considered to be an essential worker and may be required to work during non-business hours or closures in order to meet operational requirements and needs, such as clearing roads during a snow and ice event.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and additional course work in management and supervision.
  • Three years of journey level experience in road maintenance, construction or heavy equipment operations, and demonstrated ability to plan, lead, and assume responsibility for the work situation.
  • Possession of a valid Washington State CDL Class A Driver's License with air brake, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements or the ability to obtain prior to appointment. May obtain tanker and hazardous material endorsement within six months of hire.
  • A valid First Aid Card; and possess valid Washington Traffic Flagging Card or obtain within three months of hire date.
  • Must have certification, or ability to obtain certification during probation period, on all Public Works equipment through the Thurston County certification program.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the work, and provides direction to, road operation crews for a functional area, i.e., road maintenance, vegetation management, or another area as assigned by management.
  • Schedules road maintenance and construction work, including emergency response.
  • Maintains work records including timecards, material tickets, work completed, and accident reports.
  • Makes recommendations regarding personnel issues, such as hiring, evaluations, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
  • May assist the Safety Manager and Training Coordinator in meeting State and Federal safety guidelines, investigation of accidents/damage claims, and in presenting safety meeting information to the various crews.
  • Investigates and recommends appropriate action for service requests/complaints from the public.
