About The Position

The RNome Core is a facility core within the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) COBRE: Center for the RNA Biology in Health and Disease created to provide an integrative suite of RNA biology services and advice to PIs in Rhode Island who are studying RNA while also training the next generation of RNA biologists through courses/workshops. The RNome Facility Core Director, will be instrumental in establishing this core to provide long-read sequencing for identifying new RNA species and mapping RNA modifications both globally and at single-molecule level in sequence context. The RNome Facility Core Director will also add RNA biology functionality to integrate diverse existing cores allowing them to provide new RNA-related services as follows: 1) Identifying RBP occupancy and binding specificity with methods such as RNA immunoprecipitation followed by proteomics for RNA binding protein identification conducted by the Proteomics core, 2) RNA visualization with methods such as RNA FISH probe generation followed by imaging at the Imaging core, 3) RNA secondary structure analysis with methods such as FISH 4) RNA functional genomics with methods such as massively parallel reporter assays (MPRAs) followed by sequencing at the Genomics core, 5) experimental design for RNA biophysical and structural analysis in the Structural Biology core, and 6) facilitating data transfer to the Computational Biology Core. Additionally, the RNome Facility Core Director will run a series of summer courses and workshops on RNA biology which will draw participants nationally and locally. This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 08/30/2030 which may be extended based upon available funding.

Requirements

  • PhD graduate research experience in genomics and performing long read sequencing on RNA and DNA, ideally including mapping of RNA modifications.
  • Relevant coursework and advanced knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in RNA biology
  • Strong computational biology skills
  • Prior experience mentoring younger researchers as will supervise a technician
  • Flexible availability to maintain and monitor 24/7 operation of Oxford Nanopore sequencer using remote access tools and in person if necessary and fixing problems as they arrive even outside of standard work hours.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Ability to be observant and self-motivated.
  • Ability to think critically and problem-solve.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with core facility users.
  • Ability to complete accurate records and follow detailed instructions.
