About The Position

The Infusion Center at GSUH Cancer Institute is a 22 private and semi-private chair Infusion Center with a full-service infusion pharmacy and onsite laboratory treating patients in Oncology and Hematology. Infusion Center is a specialized outpatient setting where patients receive intravenous (IV), subcutaneous, and other infusion-based therapies such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biologics, blood products, hydration and supportive medications for oncology, hematologic, and other complex medical conditions. Nursing plays a central role in the patient care within the infusion center. Infusion Nurses partner closely with Oncology Providers and collaborate with Advanced Practice Providers, Pharmacists, Navigators and multidisciplinary care team to coordinate treatment, provide patient and family education, ensure safe efficient, and compassionate delivery of care in the outpatient setting. Position Summary Infusion Oncology Staff Nurse is responsible for the providing comprehensive, patient-centered nursing care to individuals receiving cancer treatment within the oncology and infusion center. The nurse delivers safe, evidence-based care including the administration of chemotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products and supportive therapies. Working collaboratively with oncology providers and the interdisciplinary team, the oncology staff nurse performs patient assessment, manages treatment-related symptoms and reactions, provide education to patients and families, and ensure adherence to oncology safety standards and regulatory requirement.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of clinical nursing experience preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in Oncology required
  • Advanced knowledge of cancer treatments protocols and guidelines
  • Experience in administering chemotherapy and other oncology treatments
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Will consider Associate Degree if enrolled in an accredited BSN program
  • New York Registered Nurse (RN) License & Registration
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Required
  • ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Required

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care in the oncology patients receiving infusion therapies including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy, blood products, and supportive treatments.
  • Performs assessments prior to treatment and throughout infusion process.
  • Monitors patients for adverse reactions and manages infusion-related complications according to policy and protocols.
  • Initiate and manages peripheral IV access and central venous access devices.
  • Administers medications and treatments in accordance with Oncology safety standards and organizational policies
  • Educates patient and families regarding treatment plans, medication regimens, potential side-effects, and symptom management.
  • Ensure adherence to chemotherapy administration standards and institutional safety protocols
  • Maintains compliance with infection prevention and safe handling of hazardous medications
  • Recognizes and responds to Oncological Emergencies
  • Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with regulatory agencies
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety efforts
  • Collaborate with Oncologists, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, social workers, oncology navigators and other interdisciplinary team members to coordinate patient care
  • Maintain continuing education related to Oncology, Clinical Competencies, and Certifications
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety efforts
