Akron General's 2400/3100 Women's Medical/Surgical and Postpartum Unit provides compassionate, safe care to every mother and baby. Our specially trained nursing staff helps welcome more than 3,000 new babies into the world every year. We believe that by continually assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care based on evidence-based practice, sound clinical judgment and critical thinking skills, our caregivers provide safe, quality, expert and compassionate care. In addition to our highly qualified nurses, maternal-fetal medicine specialists and anesthesiologists are also available 24/7 in our unit. A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. including every other weekend and 3 holidays per year.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing (ADN or BSN program)
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or ALS certification through the American Red Cross upon hire or within one year of employment
  • Completion of Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) through the American Academy of Pediatrics within six months of hire into new life center

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for a given patient population.
  • Assessments: complete ongoing assessments, recognize changes in patient condition and respond appropriately.
  • Planning: develop and update goals, involve patients and families in developing plans of care, coordinate the interdisciplinary plan of care and serve as a patient advocate.
  • Implementation: provide nursing care, administer treatments and medication and document.
  • Evaluation: participate in ongoing interdisciplinary evaluation of patient/family outcomes, contribute to the improvement of care and participate in the quality improvement process.
  • Leadership/professional development: delegate tasks/assignments, serve as a resource person/role model/mentor, pursue ongoing education and specialty certifications, maintain applicable certification/licensure and obtain any required certifications specific to the unit.
  • Department-specific duties: complete admission assessments of maternal and/or infant patients, inclusive of psychological, educational and age-specific needs of patients/families, communicate information in a timely fashion regarding changes in patient condition and patient care/unit issues, perform Unit Coordinator responsibilities as needed, serve on committees within the Department of Nursing, participate in nursing grand round presentation, incorporate the use of informatics tools, principles, theories and practices in the safe and effective delivery of care, complete all electronic and paper records related to patient care, ensure JCAHO Core Measures related to nursing care are achieved and incorporate patient safety goals in daily practice.
