The OR Unit Specialist is an RN who assumes an expanded role within the OR. Based on knowledge and experience, the individual in conjunction with the nursing leadership in the OR helps establish standards for the assigned specialties, acts as a liaison for the surgeons, facilitates case flow, assists in the orientation and training of OR personnel, and helps maintain adequate par levels of equipment, supplies, and implants within the surgical specialties. The Unit Specialist assumes responsibility for remaining knowledgeable of procedures, surgical and nursing techniques for area of specialization and seeks ways to incorporate that knowledge into daily practice. Job Description Teaches Perioperative nursing by functioning in both the scrub and circulating roles. Completes orientation skills and experience checklists on new personnel. Completes documentation regarding nursing personnel competency regarding specialty skills and equipment. Works with the OR nursing leadership team to establish nursing standards for patient care within the assigned specialty. Conducts formal and informal in-service presentations as needed to assist OR staff with skills maintenance. Participates in unit and hospital continuing education programs. Serves as a technical resource person to other team members and OR personnel. Demonstrates good communication skills with surgeons, nursing staff, and OR nursing leadership. Works cooperatively toward positive problem solving. In conjunction with OR nursing leadership, establishes an orientation and education plan for the specialty. Develops annual objectives for the specialty. Serves as liaison between vendors and surgeon needs. Develops, in conjunction with Nurse Manager, Unit Performance Improvement Programs Assists with policy creation and implementation QUALIFICATIONS The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required or preferred.
