About The Position

The SCU (Surgical Care Unit) RN is responsible for the preoperative preparation and recovery of all surgical patients. This role requires acting as an integral team member, ensuring patients move through the unit safely, efficiently, and in a timely manner. The RN must apply critical thinking skills throughout the surgical continuum for each patient under their care and be skilled in post-anesthesia recovery care for patients undergoing various procedures with different combinations of anesthesia.

Requirements

  • Registered Nursing degree
  • 2 years experience in an acute Unit
  • 1 year critical care experience
  • RN License
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification
  • PALS certification
  • Strong organization skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to manage priorities and workflow
  • Willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm and good will towards other team members
  • Computer literate
  • Effective communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred
  • PACU related critical care experience

Responsibilities

  • Opening and closing unit, including turning on lights, unlocking doors, removing keys from Pyxis, printing daily schedule, and organizing charts.
  • Checking each patient bay for suction, airways, ambu bag, and O2 tank.
  • Performing QC glucometer checks.
  • Assigning rooms for patient arrival.
  • Printing H&P's, ordering labs and EKGs where appropriate.
  • Proactively directing the patient plan of care from admission to discharge.
  • Admitting and assessing each patient in a timely manner.
  • Following hospital policies and procedures for patient and procedure verification, including all necessary preoperative checks.
  • Charting allergies and fall risk.
  • Drawing labs as needed, starting IVs as needed, noting required documentation on chart and verifying accuracy and timeliness.
  • Giving pre-op medications as ordered.
  • Noting Physician's Orders and recording all medications given on the electronic health record.
  • Providing comfort measures as needed.
  • Safely logging patient belongings and whereabouts.
  • Maintaining good communication with patient and family, communicating wait times and delays.
  • Providing education to patients and family both pre-operatively and upon discharge in an easily understood manner.
  • Ensuring that case management referrals, if any, are completed prior to discharge.
  • Working with Case Management and Social Services as necessary.
  • Calling in prescriptions as needed.
  • Providing safe recovery from anesthesia and documenting the recovery process.
  • Demonstrating excellent patient assessment skills to initiate immediate post-op plan of care.
  • Notifying Anesthesia and the Surgeon of any untoward events during the recovery phase.
  • Using the Chain of Command as appropriate.
  • Continually monitoring patient condition and asking for help when needed.
  • Documenting full assessment of patient according to procedure performed.
  • Promoting a safe environment of care and culture of safety.
  • Demonstrating an active commitment to continuous quality and performance improvement as well as own professional development.
  • Participating in staff meetings and bringing best practices to the unit for consideration.
  • Participating in post-op calls and communicating when follow-up is needed with Perioperative Coordinator SCU.
  • Communicating patient and family concerns to Periop Coordinator SCU as needed.
