The RN Oncology Navigator is accountable for the coordination and continuity of services for patients receiving multi-modality cancer treatments. The RN Oncology Navigator works within a multidisciplinary team to manage and coordinate all aspects of care for a defined population of patients. They assess and plan, in collaboration with the patient, family, and interdisciplinary healthcare team members to meet the cancer care needs of the patient spanning the continuum of care. This may include activities such as coordinating appointments between specialties, regions or sites, acting as a liaison for patients and their families, providing patient education and assessing barriers to patient care. Provides direction to other allied health staff as applicable. Care is provided in a holistic, patient-centered approach with an emphasis on assisting patients to seek an appropriate level of service when needed and reducing the overall cost of care. The RN Oncology Navigator will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for an assigned population of patients. Promotes ethical decision making and advocacy for patients. The RN Oncology Navigator will help to enhance patients' knowledge of their treatment plan and diagnosis. The RN Oncology Navigator may also promote shared decision making and collaboration amongst the patient, caregivers, and care team. The RN Oncology Navigator interacts with research professionals for awareness and promotion of research trial opportunities. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The American Nurses Association (ANA) Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, the Oncology Nursing Society, Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators competencies and guidelines provide the basis for oncology practice.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a baccalaureate nursing program.
  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
  • Must obtain one of the following certifications within 2 years of hire: OCN, AOCN, AOCNS, AOCNP, CHPON, ONNCG, AONN+FLL, BMT-CN, Certified Breast Care Nurse (CBCN).
  • Additional specialty certification/training specific to care coordination as required by the work area.
  • If providing face to face services across state lines, licensure for applicable states is required.
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator and excellent critical thinking skills required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum 2 years of clinical experience preferred.
  • Oncology experience and knowledge of disease population characteristics and desired outcomes preferred.
