About The Position

The Risk Manager is responsible for the facility’s Risk Management Program activities.  Activities include, but are not limited to, administering the risk management program, analyzing and reporting risk management data, conducting risk management educational programs, managing claims against the facility, interacting with facility and defense legal counsel.  In addition, the Risk Manager assures compliance with the state and federal regulatory standards, and participates in performance improvement, information management, utilization management, and environment of care, all with the objective of controlling and minimizing loss to protect the assets of the facility.

Requirements

  • Must possess effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate ability to exercise professional judgement regarding acquisition, recording, and communication of highly sensitive and confidential information and data.
  • Must have the ability to interact with both internal and external customers.   Must maintain calm demeanor during stressful conditions.
  • Must possess organizational skills.
  • Must demonstrate leadership skills and function effectively in team situations.
  • Must have computer skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and graphic applications.  Must utilize hospital-wide e-mail for timely communication.
  • Must have and maintain current California RN license and American Heart Association BLS certification.
  • Minimum of 3 years acute care hospital experience.
  • Education minimum Bachelors degree, CPHRM within 3 years of hire.

  • Experience in Clinical Services and Risk Management preferred.

Responsibilities

  • DEVELOP, COORDINATE, AND ADMINISTER FACILITY-WIDE RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
  • Participates in Patient Safety activities, including Root Cause Analysis, Failure Mode Effects Analysis and policy making to minimize risk
  • ASSURES REPORTING OF ANY SERIOUS EVENT INVOLVING ACTUAL OR POTENTIAL INJURY TO PATIENTS, VISITORS, OR EMPLOYEES
  • Participates in the intensive analysis of adverse outcomes, including developing actions and follow-up activities, like development of policies/procedures to assure prevention of future occurrences
  • PARTICIPATES IN THE MEDICAL STAFF PEER REVIEW PROCESS
  • UTILIZES ELECTRONIC DATABASE FOR THE PURPOSE OF COLLECTING, AGGREGATING AND ANALYZING DATA FOR PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT AND UTILIZATION MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
  • Acts as the risk resource for the facility claims data; analysis of prior claims, lawsuits, and complaints against the facility.
  • RESPONSIBLE FOR HAVING GENERAL KNOWLEDGE AND FAMILIARITY WITH THE FACILITY’S INSURANCE COVERAGE AGAINST LIABILITY AND CASUALTY LOSS
  • RESPONSIBLE FOR ACTING AS LIAISON WITH THE LIABILITY INSURANCE CARRIER
  • RESPONSIBLE FOR WORKING WITH LEGAL COUNSEL TO COORDINATE THE INVESTIGATION, PROCESSING, AND DEFENSE OF CLAIMS AGAINST THE FACILITY
  • FACILITATES TIMELY AND EFFECTIVE COMPLAINT AND GRIEVANCE RESOLUTIONS BY COLLABORATING WITH DEPARTMENT LEADERSHIP TO PREVENT LIABILITY CLAIMS
  • Performs other duties as determined by the Quality Director
