About The Position

Supports the administration of the retirement function for the Educational Employees Supplementary Retirement System of Fairfax County (ERFC) office; provides specialized and complex information regarding all ERFC retirement plans to retirement members; performs operational, administrative, and logistical tasks required to provide retirement benefit eligibility, payment estimates, and information on available benefit options; processes payroll claims; develops and delivers virtual and in-person presentations; collaborates with members, financial advisors, attorneys, state retirement system personnel, and disability providers; participates in open houses and school visit initiatives.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
  • Three (3) years of experience in retirement administration or related field.
  • Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
  • Knowledge of theories, procedures, practices, materials, and methods related to defined retirement plans.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws affecting retirement eligibility and claims.
  • Proficiency in the use of technology, data compilation, and analysis.
  • Ability to contribute to an organizational culture of client-centered service.
  • Ability to adhere to policy, process, and procedure.
  • Ability to deal quickly and accurately with quantitative information and verify the correctness of actions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain successful collaborative working relationships with diverse employees, retirees, and staff to address complicated or long-term needs.
  • Ability to exercise tact, judgment, and initiative.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and/or present information to groups.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS).

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of specialized and complex, operational, administrative, and logistical tasks for all ERFC employee and retiree plans.
  • Processes transactions in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, policies, and mandates.
  • Interprets and applies complex retirement processes, procedures, and requirements.
  • Conducts virtual and in-person retirement information sessions to provide guidance and services to ERFC members.
  • Researches and analyzes personnel data to determine eligibility or provide information about retirement benefit requirements.
  • Calculates retirement estimates based on the review of personnel records, evaluation of service time, and salary data.
  • Reviews estimates with employees and advises on the next steps to retirement.
  • Works collaboratively with employees to address complicated or longer-term retirement needs.
  • Processes applications required by retirement plans, including ordinary and service-connected disability determining eligibility and retiree death cases and survivors, ensuring the completion of all documentation.
  • Processes payroll claims for retirement including associated tax withholding, deductions, and rollover information.
  • Provides recommendations on procedure and policy changes to meet goals.
  • Develops and delivers virtual and in-person presentations to stakeholders and team members.
  • Participates in human resources benefits open houses and attends school/center visits to answer retirement questions.
  • Contacts and coordinates with the FCPS benefits office to provide information on other applicable benefit programs including health and life insurance, flexible spending accounts, and disability and leaves programs.
  • Responds to technical and non-technical requests for information orally or in writing from employees, financial advisors, attorneys, state retirement system personnel, and disability providers.
  • Composes correspondence citing applicable regulations or procedures, missing documentation, and/or requesting additional information on retirement benefits.
  • Participates in information technology systems testing and modifications.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
