The Supervisor, Respiratory Therapy is responsible for supervising department staff and providing comprehensive respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. This role involves performing a wide range of respiratory care procedures, including oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, and diagnostic services, while also monitoring patient responses and making recommendations for therapy adjustments. Key supervisory duties include ensuring adequate staffing, assigning work, assisting with meal coverage, and potentially participating in staff interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and discipline. The supervisor contributes to operational standards, strategic plans, and quality improvement initiatives, and provides clinical instruction and leadership for professional respiratory practice across various patient care settings. Additionally, the position involves active participation in facility councils and committees, assisting physicians with procedures, performing CPR, managing patient airways, operating and evaluating mechanical ventilators, conducting pulmonary function tests, assessing patient status, administering therapies, instructing patients and families, procuring sputum, evaluating lab values, performing arterial punctures and analysis, and maintaining respiratory therapy equipment and supplies. The supervisor also responds to cardio-pulmonary resuscitations.
