The Supervisor, Respiratory Therapy is responsible for supervising department staff and providing comprehensive respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. This role encompasses performing all respiratory care procedures, including oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services, and patient and staff education. The supervisor monitors patient response to therapies and recommends modifications as needed. Key responsibilities include ensuring adequate respiratory care coverage, managing staffing assignments, and contributing to operational standards. The position also involves providing clinical instruction and leadership for professional respiratory practice, participating in quality improvement initiatives, and leading clinical research. The supervisor may assist physicians with various procedures, performs CPR, maintains patient airways, manages mechanical ventilators, conducts pulmonary function tests, assesses patient status, administers diverse therapies, and educates patients and families. Additionally, the role requires procurement of sputum, evaluation of laboratory values, performance of arterial punctures and analysis, and potentially EKGs. Maintaining all respiratory therapy equipment and supplies and responding to cardio-pulmonary resuscitations are also essential functions.
