About The Position

In this highly visible hybrid role, the Respiratory Therapist Licensed Coordinator is a licensed Respiratory Therapist, who will work closely with the Chief of Cardiopulmonary and Respiratory Care to support the mission and goals of HSS and provides all aspects of Respiratory Therapy, including Pulmonary Function Testing, to patients. The Coordinator will provide direct patient care and will also provide training and support for respiratory care education at HSS. The Coordinator manages and oversees educational initiatives and programs, including but not limited to coordinating and performing intra- and inter-departmental in-services, competencies, coordinate educational in-services with vendors, and overseeing respiratory cares student rotations. Contributes to the institution's knowledge of the latest trends, practices and state-of-the-art technology as applicable. Promotes continuing education and assists in coordinating respiratory education community events and workshops. Backup administrator and management of operations to Chief Therapist .

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Graduate of COARC approved School of Respiratory Therapy program.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist licensed in New York
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • 3+ years as Respiratory Therapist
  • 2+ year of ICU Experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Reports and escalates concerns to Chief Respiratory Therapist regarding quality assurance issues, safety incidents or other difficulties appropriately and in accordance with HSS policy.
  • Assesses efficacy of therapy treatment(s) and provides recommendations to provider on any changes in therapy.
  • Always verifies correct patient by checking name on patient's wrist band.
  • Observes patient during treatment; notifies immediate supervisor/nurse/provider of any adverse reaction to therapy;
  • Completes all procedures during the shift.
  • Effective time management - Prioritizes emergencies and critical patients
  • Responsive and communicates to team on delays and needs
  • Consults with providers in establishing Respiratory Care plans, determining appropriate therapeutic modalities, and maintaining the continuity of Respiratory care for patients in critical and general care areas.
  • Performs routine oxygen and equipment rounds.
  • Always checks equipment function;
  • Replaces solutions as necessary;
  • Always records data;
  • Analyzes oxygen concentrations as appropriate.
  • Ensure proper connection to power
  • Sets up, operates, and/or monitors:
  • Equipment to obtain induced sputum specimen to aid in diagnosis of pulmonary disease/illness;
  • Pulse oximeters and capnographs
  • Mechanical ventilators when patient's Respiratory system is incapable of adequate spontaneous ventilation.
  • Oxygen delivery devices
  • Humidifiers
  • Nebulizers
  • Chest physiotherapy devices
  • Collaborates with patient care team members to encourage correct management of ventilator and supplemental oxygen in accordance with approved hospital protocols.
  • Participates in Signal One incidents as required.
  • Performs pulmonary function tests and submits to physician for interpretation as ordered.
  • Performs patient rounds, obtains patient history and makes assessment for patient treatment.
  • Performs all treatments and testing as per provider's orders to include but not limited to mechanical ventilation, oxygen therapy, chest physiotherapy, incentive spirometry, chest postural drainage, endotracheal tube maintenance, nebulizer treatments, weaning protocols, extubations, aerosol therapy, humidification, non-invasive ventilation, pulmonary function testing.
  • Performs stat requests expeditiously.
  • Participate in patient rounds on critical care units
  • All available equipment circuited, bagged, and labeled to be ready for use
  • Takes equipment out of service when needed and submits to Biomedical Engineering
  • Orders and restocks supplies when stock is low or near expiration date
  • Ensure oxygen tanks for transport are available and secured
  • Records all pertinent information concerning patient procedures, and patient response to therapy in Respiratory Care progress notes and department billing/documentation forms.
  • Maintains required files, records and reports on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintains and develops competence through required in-service and continuing educational programs.
  • Performs patient education and staff training.
  • Explains procedures to patients/family and answers questions, provides physical/emotional support to patient/family, and seeks guidance when necessary.

  • Manage and oversee both formal and informal educational processes and programs, including but not limited to in-services, case study reports, clinical simulation workshops
  • Provide instruction and training opportunities to HSS medical staff, nursing, APPs, and other health team members regarding Respiratory Care procedures and protocols
  • Presents topics/lectures at department in services.
  • Provide and promote opportunities for continuing education
  • Complies with policies and procedures concerning infection control and safety in order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Disassembles, disinfects, and reassembles respiratory equipment as required.
  • Assists other personnel as required.
  • Exhibits flexibility with respect to scheduling and work assignments.
  • Follows departmental policies and procedures.
  • Keep up to date on communications, including emails.
  • Participates in department QA/PI program and improves performance based on results obtained from QI activities.
  • Be a clinical expert/resource for department
  • Engage staff to participate in respiratory care awareness activities
  • Facilitates and participates in the development of test script and all phases of system testing.
  • Active member of committee/council
  • Promotes QA/PI and leads activities/projects
  • Coordinate Performance Improvement data collection for Respiratory Care Department.
  • Active involvement in HSS-based community work promoting respiratory care
  • Perform compliance audits
  • Assist Chief in reviewing policies/procedures
  • Provide expertise and manage resources to support research activities
  • Assess computerized workload and adjust shift assignment accordingly.
  • Assist in the preparation of employee evaluations
