About The Position

Because healing happens best when people feel safe, seen, and supported. YSS is seeking a dedicated, compassionate Residential Therapist to join our team and we want you to apply for this rewarding position. As part of our Residential Team, you’ll walk alongside youth and families as they build skills to move back into their homes and communities. You’ll provide individual, family, and group therapy while supporting clients through substance use, mental health, and behavioral challenges—all through a trauma-informed, strengths-based lens.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, or Psychology
  • Iowa licensure (LISW, LMSW, LMHC, or LMFT) or a temporary license with intent to pursue independent licensure
  • Strong listening, observation, communication, and documentation skills
  • Fluency in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or training in substance use disorders, adolescents, and family systems
  • CADC certification (Iowa Board of Substance Abuse)
  • Two or more years of related clinical experience
  • Comfort using Microsoft Office and basic databases
  • Experience working with youth and families
  • Certification by the Iowa Board of Substance Abuse as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC).
  • Be rooted in purpose and driven by equity, inclusion, and positive social impact.
  • Bring humility, respect, and cultural awareness to every interaction.
  • Speaks a language in addition to English (especially one spoken in our communities).

Responsibilities

  • Build trusting, therapeutic relationships that honor each client’s story, strengths, and lived experience
  • Complete thoughtful, comprehensive assessments to understand mental health needs, history, and current challenges
  • Translate assessments into clear diagnoses and meaningful, realistic treatment goals
  • Partner with clients to develop individualized treatment plans
  • Provide individual and family therapy using evidence-based practices
  • Facilitate group therapy that promotes connection, peer support, and growth
  • Monitor progress and adjust treatment plans as needs evolve
  • Collaborate closely with families, YSS staff, schools, and community partners
  • Advocate for additional services and make referrals when helpful
  • Respond calmly and effectively to crises, ensuring safety and support
  • Maintain timely, accurate documentation that meets agency, state, and accreditation requirements
  • Meet expectations for client service hours while keeping quality front and center
  • Stay curious—engaging in ongoing training and professional development
  • Practice ethically and in alignment with YSS policies and your professional license
  • Maintain licensure to practice in the State of Iowa
