Guiding Eyes for the Blind has an extraordinary opportunity for a skilled Nurse (LPN or RN). Guiding Eyes provides on-campus housing for our visually impaired students aged 16 and older, during their two-week orientation and training with their new guide dog. As a Residential Nurse , you will ensure the well-being of students by providing a safe environment as well as creating a positive experience for them during their residential training. In this role, the Residential Nurse will support students in the training program, provide excellent care and perform established processes in accordance with Guiding Eyes policies. This includes, but is not limited to, oversight of evening activities (crafts, music, games, wellness, etc.) for the students, maintaining an active and accessible presence to facilitate student engagement as well as manage medical conditions and solve problems or emergencies that may arise. Additionally, you will assist students and their guide dogs to navigate safely around the building as well as with basic dog care such as supervising and helping in the relief area. This position is onsite at our Campus in Yorktown Heights, NY and requires overnight stays . It is a rotational schedule, approximately three nights per week (4:30pm to 6:30am) which can include weekends and holidays. In addition, the ability to cover approximately one to two on-call shifts per month is required . The position includes a meal and a private room during your shift. Looking for flexibility? Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with an active NYS license
  • Experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in residential or disability support environments
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certified required
  • Ability to accurately assess situations and make quick, sound judgements independently
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students and staff
  • Reliability, high level of integrity, punctuality, along with a warm demeanor are essential
  • This is an essential personnel position so flexibility in availability is a must; weekends and holidays are required in addition to the ability to cover on-call shifts
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs; Salesforce savvy a plus
  • Must be comfortable around large, active dogs
  • Valid Driver's License

Responsibilities

  • Provide overnight medical care and support for students staying in the residential program
  • Respond to and act accordingly on any safety or medical issues
  • Assist students with managing chronic conditions or mobility-related issues; ensure students self-administer any prescribed medications as directed by their Healthcare Provider as well as adhere to any prescribed diet and allergy restrictions
  • Maintain accurate medical records in accordance with company policy and document all interactions
  • Write brief shift reports and effectively communicate with the nursing team as well as daytime staff
  • Ensure a safe, supportive, and respectful environment for students during overnight hours while fostering independence
  • Offer students support for general tasks as needed
  • Foster trust with students by building personal connections and showing genuine interest in their lives
  • Promote and supervise evening activities
  • Explain to students their dog's position or behavior
  • Assess the need for emergency vet care and follow established procedures (training provided)
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned
