About The Position

Eden Autism has an awesome summer opportunity – perfect for college students and new graduates looking for field experience and a rewarding summer job! We are seeking Residential Summer Camp Counselors to work with children (ages 11 to 21) with autism as they attend summer camp in a safe and enriching environment! You’ll be assisting campers to achieve IEP goals while engaging them in structured activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and movement, and local day trips. This position runs only during the summer – from the end of June through mid-August. We run a residential (sleep-away camp) program – our campers require supervision 24 hours, 7 days a week. Nights and weekends are required of all staff, and we work a rotating shift. The Residential Camp Counselor earns $5,000 for 7 weeks of full-time work.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree or active enrollment in an undergraduate program strongly preferred.
  • Some experience working with developmental disabilities, including autism, preferred.
  • Mandatory training is provided the week prior to the start of camp.
  • Lift and/or move up to 50lbs.
  • Sit, stand, bend, squat, kneel, stretch, stoop, and/or reach above shoulder level for extended periods of time.
  • Pass and maintain Professional Crisis Management (PCM) certification, including implementation of all strategies and techniques.
  • Basic swimming skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to helping individuals with autism.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with students and other teaching assistants and employees.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service within all aspects of the job duties on a consistent basis.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a positive working rapport with students. Respect students’ rights.
  • Implement teaching and behavior support programs using behavioral model appropriately and consistently. Implement age-appropriate reinforcement systems.
  • Appropriately manage maladaptive behaviors including tantrums, self-injury, and aggression.
  • Collect and record teaching and behavior management data daily. Maintain graphs on all teaching and behavior programs. Complete student communication journal daily.
  • Assist in organizing, conducting, and participating in group activities utilizing the leader/prompter model.
  • Participate in swim instruction during each student’s group session.
  • Assist students with daily hygiene routines to include handwashing, bath-rooming, dressing, showering, etc.
  • Assist other staff members in supervising students on all activities as needed.
  • Provide coverage for night duty as determined by the program schedule.
