About The Position

The Resident Monitor position is part-time and involves monitoring the activity of residents on an assigned shift to ensure safety, security, and compliance with house rules. The role requires maintaining accurate and complete records and logs, and ensuring the housing facility is kept neat and proper. The monitor serves as an example of grace and encouragement to Emergency Refuge residents, completing intake paperwork and keypunching information into the HMIS database. Responsibilities include preparing rooms for residents, checking fire equipment, distributing linens and hygiene items, and securing/providing access to medications. The monitor continuously monitors resident activities, checks facility security (windows, doors, cameras), conducts periodic rounds, and records unique situations. They are expected to respond to emergencies calmly, initiating corrective action for development rather than punishment. The role also involves opening and closing house doors, assigning and ensuring completion of resident housekeeping tasks, and conducting campus security checks with responsive action and logging. Additionally, the monitor conducts breath alcohol checks and property inspections for compliance, answers telephones regarding housing operations, wakes clients, ensures their departure by designated times, and issues meal tickets. The individual must represent The Salvation Army with patience and encouragement. Other duties include collecting and washing dirty towels and sheets, cleaning and mopping lobby, hall, and office areas, and emptying/replacing trash liners.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and practices
  • Knowledge of basic record-keeping practices and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients to control, lead, and motivate behavior
  • Ability to work with the public, encompassing all types of behaviors
  • Ability to extend grace in the face of rebellion without becoming emotionally upset
  • Ability to work independently and with limited supervision while staying within established policy and procedural boundaries
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language
  • Ability to respond to emergencies quickly and calmly while maintaining control and initiating the proper corrective action
  • Ability to perform combinations of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis
  • Limited physical effort required for walking, standing, lifting, and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.), 5-10% of work time

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the activity of residents on an assigned shift, ensuring safety, security, and compliance with house rules
  • Maintain accurate and complete records and logs containing pertinent information
  • Ensure that the housing facility is maintained in a neat and proper order
  • Serve as an example of grace in the relationship with and encouragement of each Emergency Refuge resident
  • Complete all necessary intake paperwork and accurately keypunch the information into the HMIS database system
  • Ensure all rooms are in proper order before residents arrive
  • Check fire equipment to ensure it is in working order
  • Distribute towels, linens, and personal hygiene items
  • Secure and provide clients access to medications as required
  • Monitor the activities of the residents, ensuring safety and compliance with house rules
  • Check the security of all windows and doors
  • Monitor cameras and make periodic rounds of the entire facility
  • Record any unique situations occurring on the assigned shift
  • Respond to emergencies in a calm manner and initiate appropriate corrective action in accordance with established policies and procedures, in an effort to instruct and develop, and not in an effort to punish
  • Open and close the house doors at designated hours of operation
  • Assign housekeeping and other tasks to residents
  • Ensure residents perform assigned house duties properly
  • Ensure compliance with house rules
  • Address shortcomings to develop skill set, not to punish
  • Conduct campus security checks as assigned, taking responsive action if required, and logging details of completing the same bullet point notes of pertinent activity
  • Conduct breath alcohol checks on all residents entering the shelter facility
  • Thoroughly inspect all property being brought into the facility to ensure compliance with house rules
  • Answer telephone and respond to questions regarding the housing operations
  • Wake clients at the designated time, instruct them to collect their sheets, and ensure that all residents are out of the housing facility by that time
  • Issue meal tickets for residents of the emergency shelter
  • Conduct oneself as a representative of The Salvation Army in the tone used, patience extended, and encouragement offered to those we serve
  • Collect and wash all dirty towels and sheets
  • Clean, sweep, and mop the lobby, hall, and office areas
  • Empty trash cans and replace trash liners
  • Perform other related work as required
