About The Position

Resident Directors mentor and assist Resident Assistants while maintaining the residential facilities and promoting biblical community, diversity, leadership development, and spiritual growth among on-campus students in the residence halls to which they are assigned. Resident Directors live on campus, in residence hall apartments, and provide 24/7 on-call responses to the halls they oversee for student behavioral and crisis situations. Additionally, they monitor the maintenance, custodial and communication needs of those residence halls. The Resident Director works collaboratively with the other Resident Directors in the Office of Residence Life to assist with student development and programming initiatives. Resident Directors provide staffing for the following academic breaks: Fall, Thanksgiving, Winter, Spring, and Easter break. Resident Directors also serve on a weekly rotating basis as the campus wide On-Call Resident Director throughout the academic year. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Supervise Resident Assistants Develop and deliver comprehensive and effective recruitment, retention, training, and performance management programs for Resident Assistants. Supervise assigned team of 6-12 Resident Assistants in the design and implementation of social, cultural and educational programs in the residence halls. Facilitate a weekly RA Group with team of assigned Resident Assistants and meet bi-weekly with each assigned individual Resident Assistant for discipleship and mentorship purposes. 2. Develop Students Supervise the overall operation of a residential area, including organizational planning, community development, and day-to-day management of that area. Oversee the Liberty Way process in collaboration with the Office of Community Life. Provide 24/7 crisis responses as needed for student issues such as mental health, physical health, safety and security, student conflict, or facilities emergencies, and ensure appropriate follow-up. Work proactively with students, family members and other constituents to quickly and effectively resolve issues including, but not limited to, student development, judicial affairs, housing, and student health and wellness. Lead a bi-weekly Converge Leadership Program small group. 3. Facilitate Housing Processes Assist in the coordination and implementation of housing procedures, including room changes, room selection, move-in and move-out periods. Inspect the residence halls for any fire or safety hazards and conduct 2 fire drills per semester. Supervise the opening & closing of residence halls. Report any damage to the residence halls and collect documentation for assessment of damage charges to students. Assist in Residence Life summer camps, conferences, summer housing, and LUO Intensive housing. 4. Communicate effectively with coworkers, parents, and students. 5. Remain abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services, and leading industry performance benchmarks as it pertains to Student Affairs 6. Work effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU's mission. 7. Other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 6-12 Resident Assistants DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Level II Provides expert insight into the role of RD Serve as a resource for peer development and RD Team cohesion. Provides insight and guidance to designated new RD(s) serving as an RD “Coach”. Offers proactive constructive advisement and aid to the ResLife Leadership Team. Regularly contributes new ideas and initiatives through the submission of proposal forms. Works to bring proposals to fruition, where appropriate. Assigned specific tasks and/or projects to complete for the Res Life office. Executes actions within department committee assignments with excellence and attention to detail. Seeks professional growth in specific subject matter and contributes to the growth of ResLife by suggesting training in that area. Leads RA Orientation and Training breakout sessions Designs and lead training within other areas of Student Life at the direction of the Senior Staff. Leads specific groups (i.e. Redeeming Sexuality, etc.) for RAs. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Level III Demonstrates increased responsibility in the execution of their duties. Guides and mentors RAs beyond the typical expectations (i.e. Career guidance and resourcing, Engaging with RAs outside of the home RA group, Creating a culture of Hospitality, etc.). Meets bi-monthly with other RDs to inspire, motivate, and empower them to achieve their fullest potential. Leads in department committees by being assigned specific leadership responsibilities within the team and ensures execution of those responsibilities. Provides expert level contributes to Residence Life, Student Life, and Liberty University Meets with the Executive Director once a semester to offer departmental feedback and suggest improvements and proposals for Student Life and Liberty University. Leads professional development sessions once a semester with the RD Team. Regularly meets with individuals in other departments to engage in cross-departmental collaboration aimed at enhancing the overall student experience.

Requirements

  • Completed bachelor’s degree and pursuit of master’s degree/continuing education
  • 1-2 years of student or peer development experience
  • Prior experience with group participation and/or facilitation
  • Effectively communicates in both verbal and written forms to convey clear, well-articulated information.
  • Able to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Demonstrates strong organization, project management, and managerial skills.
  • Possesses excellent computer skills, necessary for Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Task oriented and dedicated, meets deadlines while going the extra mile and producing quality work products.
  • Anticipates needs and takes steps to meet those needs before they crop up, taking a proactive and intentional approach to their duties.
  • Sincere and affable, is able to build relational rapport quickly, establishing productive relationships across a variety of departments and contexts.

  • Frequently required to travel to local and campus locations.
  • Frequently required to sit for extended periods to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate and review ResLife media content.
  • Required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 20 or fewer pounds.
  • Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree complete - preferably in student development, religion, counseling, or related field
  • 1-2 years of experience in higher education student development
  • Prior experience with group leadership and facilitation
