About The Position

The Resident Assistant (RA) is a live-in staff member within The New School residence halls and an integral part of the Department of Residential Education program at The New School. RAs work to create a positive environment by fostering a sense of community within the residence halls. RAs provide administrative support for The New School residence halls and work with staff to provide assistance to students in order to facilitate the best possible operation of the residence halls. RAs are expected to serve students and to uphold the standards of The New School and the Department of Residential Education in the highest regard possible. It is essential that all staff members are viewed as credible, positive role models that abide by the university and the Department of Residential Education policies and procedures, the RA position description and contract, and the Housing License Agreement. RAs are expected to behave in a manner that is professional and attuned to the goals and objectives of the Department of Residential Education, both on and off-campus. Requirements

  • Must be a full-time, matriculated New School student with at least sophomore standing.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be in good standing with university offices.
  • Experience with diverse populations and demonstrated crisis management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with Google suite applications such as Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google forms.
  • Knowledge in Adobe and other creative softwares

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safe and inclusive residential communities.
  • Host interactive engagement opportunities and community meetings.
  • Promote a sense of belonging and support diverse ideas and beliefs.
  • Serve as a resource person and make appropriate referrals to university offices.
  • Inform students about university resources and general information.
  • Respond to behavioral and crisis situations, documenting incidents promptly.
  • Mediate conflicts and report any discriminatory behavior.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation with fellow student staff.
  • Regularly check and respond to emails related to RA responsibilities.
  • Attend mandatory weekly staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Assist with hall operations, including check-ins, check-outs, Admitted Students Day, Open House Events, and emergency procedures and more.
  • Adhere to university policies and maintain confidentiality regarding student concerns.
  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act, reporting crimes and violations.

Benefits

  • Single occupancy bedroom in the employees assigned residence hall.
  • Annual stipend of $3,000, paid bi-weekly.
  • Meal plan consisting of $1,775 Dining Dollars Plus per semester.
