The Brain Aging and Dementia (BAnD) Lab is part of the Martinos Center in the Charlestown Navy Yard. The lab’s research is primarily focused on neuroimaging (MRI, EEG, NIRS) and combining that imaging with behavioral and clinical variables to look at vascular contributions to brain aging and dementias. The lab’s study population is generally over the age of 50. Depending on the study, some recruit cognitively healthy adults, some individuals with mild cognitive impairment, and some with Alzheimer’s or dementia. The Research Tech I’s responsibilities include working independently under general direction of the PI and program manager to assist in research studies. They will be responsible for facilitating subject-oriented study procedures. They will be trained on setting up and running imaging modalities such as 3T and 7T MRI, EEG, and NIRS and data transfer to appropriate data storage units. Additional responsibilities include phlebotomy and blood sample preparation, and administrative duties related to the careful operation of the study protocol. Job Summary Summary: Responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, organizing and preparing samples, conducting experiments, and recording and analyzing data. Candidates who are in the process of completing their bachelor's degree have a grace period of six months from their hire date (up to 1 year if starting per diem) to provide degree equivalency verification.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required
  • Prior laboratory experience, either through academic coursework, internships, or employment 1-2 years preferred
  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures.
  • Familiarity with common laboratory equipment and instruments used in research experiments.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and scientific software tools.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey experimental procedures, results, and challenges.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records
  • Good personal skills, ability to work with complex clinical populations

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred prior experience in MATLAB, Python, and R programming languages
  • Basic statistical background (advanced preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory experiments following established protocols and procedures.
  • Prepare and handle samples, reagents, and solutions, ensuring accuracy and adherence to safety guidelines.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, conducting routine calibration and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Record experimental data accurately and maintain organized records of procedures, protocols, and results.
  • Compile and analyze data using appropriate statistical and analytical methods.
  • Assist in data interpretation and presentation, contributing to research findings and reports.
  • Assist in the operation of study visits
  • Perform data acquisition using various neuroimaging modalities (MRI, EEG, NIRS, etc.)
  • Maintaining and quality checking acquired data and managing study trackers
  • Writing code to assist in data management, processing and analysis
  • Perform statistical analyses on collected data
  • Manage internal and external communications with collaborators regarding technical or other issues that may need to be addressed
