About The Position

The Research Technician will have the opportunity to join a cutting-edge research laboratory in the Department of Urology under the supervision of Dr. Renea Sturm. The Sturm Lab is dedicated to applying basic science and technological advancements to improve equity, quality, and consistency in urologic care, with a particular emphasis on developing engineered tissue alternatives to apply in lower urinary tract reconstructive procedures. The Research Technician will perform molecular, biochemical, and cellular research projects aimed at developing novel treatments and surgical technologies for lower urinary tract reconstruction. Responsibilities include executing routine experimental protocols and procedures in animal experiments, the use of human specimens, tissue culture, protein isolation, proteomics and microscopy. They will be responsible for a variety of cell culture and tissue culture procedures and assays and trained to perform specialized tests related to urodynamics and tissue tension on tissue and scaffold preparation. Further experimental tasks will include physiological and mechanical testing of bladder and urethra; structural analysis, including histologic and scanning electron microscopic tissue evaluation; and extracellular matrix protein assays. The Research Technician will also assist with duties related to lab operations including supply management, equipment maintenance and calibration, preparation of laboratory materials and reagents, handling of live animals, assistance in surgical procedures, and tissue preparation and analysis. Additionally, they will be responsible for maintenance of tissue procurement logs, maintenance and reporting of data obtained in ongoing experiments, and maintenance of the lab in line with all safety and regulatory requirements. The Research Technician may have some supervisory responsibilities overseeing undergraduate students and Research Fellows in the lab.
