About The Position

The General Hospital Corporation Mass General Brigham is a not-for-profit organization supporting patient care, research, teaching, and community service. The Harris Orthopaedics Laboratory, established in 1969, aims to improve patient outcomes through materials science and clinical research, focusing on orthopaedic applications and the development of polymeric and hybrid materials. This entry-level research position supports a translational research program in implantable biomaterial development. It is suitable for new engineering graduates interested in medical applications of basic research and gaining experience before pursuing graduate or medical school. The role is responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, organizing and preparing samples, conducting experiments, and recording and analyzing data. Candidates completing their bachelor's degree have a grace period of six months (up to 1 year for per diem) to provide degree equivalency verification.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required
  • Prior laboratory experience, either through academic coursework, internships, or employment
  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures.
  • Familiarity with common laboratory equipment and instruments used in research experiments.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and scientific software tools.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey experimental procedures, results, and challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Laboratory formulation including preparation of macromers, polymers, polymer blends, polymeric consolidation.
  • Characterization of polymers on-site and local off-site research facilities including drug elution, mechanical and fatigue testing, wear testing, thermal and structural characterization.
  • Modification of polymers including outside services such as radiation processing.
  • Assembly, operation, maintaining operation protocols, scheduling management and some maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Ordering supplies and keeping track of related inventory.
  • Maintaining clean equipment, glassware and laboratory space.
  • Storing data, samples, and protocols in the appropriate locations in the appropriate formats.
  • Working alongside other research technicians, MD students, PhD students and post-doctoral fellows.
  • Organizing and accurately maintaining written records of procedures and data.
  • Generating and compiling experimental information/results in graphs, charts, and reports.
  • Preparing written and/or verbal reports for supervisor and/or senior research personnel.
  • Collaborating with team members and supervisor(s) in developing research methodologies and research objectives.
  • Collaborating with team members and supervisor(s) in writing and editing material for publication; opportunity for authorship in publications.
  • Perform laboratory experiments following established protocols and procedures.
  • Prepare and handle samples, reagents, and solutions, ensuring accuracy and adherence to safety guidelines.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, conducting routine calibration and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Record experimental data accurately and maintain organized records of procedures, protocols, and results.
  • Compile and analyze data using appropriate statistical and analytical methods.
  • Assist in data interpretation and presentation, contributing to research findings and reports.
