About The Position

The Department of Neurology has an opening for a motivated full-time Research Services Professional to work in the laboratory of Jeffrey Bennett, MD, PhD and Gregory Owens, PhD. The laboratory investigates the role of B cells and antibodies in the pathogenesis of human demyelinating diseases multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica. Research is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, DOD, biotech and philanthropic organizations. Current projects involve mechanisms of antibody-mediated demyelination, identification and prevalence of disease-relevant antigens, bioassays for antigen detection in patient specimens, animal models of antibody-mediated CNS demyelination, mechanisms of complement pathway inhibition, and relationships between Epstein-Barr virus infection and patient B cell immunity in MS. We are seeking an individual who is collaborative, communicative, detail-oriented, organized, proactive, able to think critically, focused on quality, dedicated to personal growth, and highly motivated. The position will be expected to work independently under the supervisor of the PI but will also engage, communicate, and collaborate with various colleagues (e.g., principal investigator, neurology research staff, finance, and billing professionals, and regulatory team). The PRA is responsible for providing a high level of professionalism to both internal and external constituents that will maintain the positive image of the Department and University.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or directly related field from an accredited institution
  • 1 year of professional level research experience in immunology or neurosciences
  • A combination of education and related technical/military/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • 2 years of professional research experience in immunology or neurosciences
  • Advanced knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in immunology or neurosciences research
  • Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab
  • Experience in tissue culture and/or human neuronal cell culture
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative microscopy and image analysis
  • Experience in animal work, tissue preparation and immunohistochemistry
  • Experience in PCR, protein analysis and molecular cloning

Responsibilities

  • Independently and creatively identify laboratory solutions
  • Independently Review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects including working with rodents
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist and train junior team members
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Assist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Maintains subject level documentation and prepares documents, equipment and/or supplies
  • Assist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and shares results with leadership
  • Provide laboratory science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of investigators, researchers and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplines
  • Serve as a resource to PIs and other stakeholders
