About The Position

The Hong Laboratory is located within the Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research and Training Institute at the University of Utah ( CVRTI ). The Hong Lab is focused on translational research and therapeutics for heart failure. We are looking for an exceptional individual who wants to work in a highly supportive research environment and be involved in high impact research projects. The research will conform to guidelines of Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) within the CVRTI for IND -enabling studies exploring a new therapy for heart failure in preclinical models. The Research Scientist will perform advanced research laboratory techniques and procedures by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. The Scientist will also help with supervision of lab technicians and lab specialists and be responsible for keeping detailed GLP documentation for the project.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or other scientific discipline in a related field plus four years of experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Responsibilities

  • Support the study director and upper management of the institute to improve and maintain GLP standards for the laboratory.
  • Responsible for training and supervising employees in Good Laboratory Practice ( GLP ) and scientific techniques.
  • Managing day-to-day operations and GLP compliance of the laboratory
  • Keep detailed records and reports of expenditures.
  • Performs specialized tests and procedures using complex equipment.
  • Makes advanced statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.
  • Will supervise the care of research animals; perform minor animal surgery or collect animal tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Orders supplies and experimental materials needed to conduct research.
  • Reviews scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information concerning experimental procedures.
