About The Position

The Department of Surgery is actively recruiting for a Research Program Assistant. The Research Assistant is responsible for coordination of the Department of Surgery’s biobank initiatives by managing regulatory compliance, data collection, specimen collection, and indexing.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and four years of relevant program experience.
  • A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required program experience.
  • Ability to perform job functions in an upright position.

  • Ability to push/pull objects, up to 15 lbs., unassisted.
  • Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes.
  • Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand.
  • Ability to see and recognize objects at a distance.
  • Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception.
  • Good peripheral vision capabilities.
  • Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
  • Ability to hear and/or understand whispered conversations at a distance of 3 feet.
  • Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements.
  • Ability to work in dusty areas.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in the collection, processing, and proper storage of tissue and blood specimens, ensuring specimens are directed to the appropriate storage locations and ready for research use.
  • Develop, maintain, and update a centralized database of all specimens collected by Department of Surgery investigators, ensuring accurate tracking and data integrity.
  • Assist trainees and faculty in preparing, compiling, and submitting funding applications related to biobanking projects, including grant documentation and coordination with mentors.
  • Lead in the establishment and maintenance of IRB applications for the collection of benign tissue and blood specimens, ensuring compliance with institutional and federal guidelines.
