About The Position

The Office of the Vice President for Research & Innovation (OVPRI) promotes excellence in research at the University of Oregon. Research, both basic and applied, is fundamental to the mission of the University and is essential to Oregon’s economic and civic vitality. The Office is committed to enhancing these efforts by providing administrative and financial support for sponsored programs, including identification of funding opportunities, proposal submission, research compliance, and contracts and grant administration. OVPRI supports interdisciplinary research centers and essential core facilities and emboldens innovation and economic development through strategic partnering and technology transfer initiatives. The UO has a long tradition of interdisciplinary research that continues through the production of new knowledge and innovative solutions to society’s grand challenges. The Office of Research Integrity within the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation provides research compliance support across campus. The program covers a broad range of activities to ensure the timely, ethical, and compliant facilitation of research, including export controls, conflicts of interest, data management, human subjects research, the responsible conduct of research, research misconduct investigations, animal welfare services, foreign influence, and national security in research. The Research Integrity Compliance Officer supports constituents in research compliance and policy needs with a strong emphasis on conflicts of interest, export controls, and congruence in cross-unit reporting, while coordinating as necessary across all regulatory functions. The Research Integrity Compliance Officer will build systems and communicate changes in the rapidly evolving fields of research integrity. The position identifies best practices in adhering to regulations, summarizes university policies and federal guidance for constituents, develops related outreach materials, and troubleshoots solutions to promote efficiency, including pursuing execution of desired changes to the university’s Research Administration Portal. This position will monitor and execute changes in a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape impacting export controls, conflicts of interest, and national security/ research security. Reporting directly to the Export Control Officer, the successful candidate will have a strong customer service focus, be a self-starter, be able to work independently and as part of a team to meet shared and individual goals, and be flexible, adaptable, solutions-oriented, and responsive. The successful candidate will have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds and will maintain the highest ethical standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree AND
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in business, finance, research administration, regulatory compliance, international engagement or education, or related field; OR
  • Advanced degree related to research integrity – such as a J.D.
  • Ability to research, read, interpret, and apply complex and varying regulations.
  • Ability to foster an environment that facilitates research, collaboration, and global engagement while effectively navigating an increasingly complex regulatory compliance landscape.
  • Proficiency with multiple forms of information technology, including word processing, data entry, managing electronic information, general artificial intelligence tools, and database administration.
  • Ability to think critically, assess risk, and discern which issues to escalate to senior members of the team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, combined with diplomacy and discretion.
  • Ability to stay organized, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with team members, faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with overlapping deadlines and frequent interruptions while maintaining a high level of customer service.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional learning and growth.
  • Handles highly complex and confidential information with discretion.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience with ethics or compliance policies, procedures, and programs.
  • One year of experience with national security, shipping, visas, international engagement, international education, licensing, technology transfer, contracts, investigations, or compliance.
  • Advanced degree in research administration, law, business administration, management, public administration, public policy, research ethics, international education, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in a research-intensive higher education environment.
  • Experience applying export control regulations or other federal regulations.
