About The Position

The Research Financial Analyst II provides comprehensive financial support to the Senior Director of Research Operations. This role is responsible for managing Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA) financial activities to ensure the timely, accurate, and efficient preparation of general ledger entries, account reconciliations, budget-to-actual analyses, and financial statements. The position supports award setup, invoicing, and accounts receivable management to ensure accurate billing and timely collections. In addition, the role focuses on internal financial operations and reporting, provides guidance and training to office staff on financial reporting, and leverages expertise in financial systems and other databases and applications. This position adheres to all system and departmental compliance policies and applicable laws and regulations and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, sponsored program regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with financial systems, Microsoft Excel, and financial reporting tools.
  • Ability to interpret financial data, identify trends, and support informed decision-making.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • 1–3 years of related experience, with prior exposure to research finance, sponsored programs, or grant management.
  • Experience with financial systems, Microsoft Excel, and other reporting tools to support journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reports.
  • Understanding of accounting principles, cost center management, and basic sponsored program regulations and compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in compiling financial information for analysis and review; prepare basic financial reports using general ledger activity and other system applications.
  • Format financial data in a clear, user-friendly manner for internal review.
  • Support accurate and timely administration of costs charged to appropriate cost centers.
  • Work with Sponsored Programs Administration to create new activities and close expired activities.
  • Process routine journal entries and assist with effort reporting under award setup by gathering documentation and coordinating with SPA.
  • Prepare draft financial reports for review by Senior staff.
  • Assist in analyzing invoices and financial statements for federal and non-federal awards.
  • Support preparation and delivery of bi-monthly deficit reports for leadership meetings.
  • Maintain awareness of sponsor regulations and institutional policies and apply guidance from Senior staff to minimize compliance risk.
  • Collaborate with Finance, SPA, and other departments to process journal entries, budget adjustments, and activity closeouts.
  • Ensure timelines for account cycles and sponsor milestones are met with guidance from Senior analysts.
