About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University is a private, global research university that stands among the world’s most renowned education institutions. With ground-breaking brain science, path-breaking performances, creative start-ups, big data, big ambitions, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn’t imagine the future, we invent it. If you’re passionate about joining a community that challenges the curious to deliver work that matters, your journey starts here! Innovation. Interdisciplinary collaboration. Complex problem solving. In Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university. Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Research Engineer to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by providing support in the area of additive manufacturing (AM) by building 3D objects and adding layer upon layer of material. The research engineer will understand the fundamentals of manufacturing 3D objects and study their deformation, while devising engineering strategies to reduce the distortion and other tasks that are assigned to you.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 0-1 year of experience
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • Successful background check

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement innovative engineering strategies to mitigate part distortion. Your goal will be to refine the manufacturing workflow to achieve "near-net-shape" production, ensuring final parts require minimal post-processing.
  • Execute hands-on builds using AM technology to test theoretical strategies. You will be responsible for documenting experimental results, maintaining detailed lab notebooks, and preparing technical reports for project stakeholders.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Additive Manufacturing lab. This includes maintaining specialized equipment, managing material inventories (nano/microparticles), and ensuring all safety protocols are strictly followed.
  • Serve as a technical lead by training new students and interns on lab equipment, AM software, and experimental methodologies. You will guide them in best practices for sintering and material handling.
