About The Position

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Associate II for the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM). Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate II, is responsible for conducting highly specialized and technical research in the field of microbial ecology. The Research Associate II will focus on the study of the role of animal microbe interactions and the symbioses between microorganisms and their hosts. The Research Associate II will perform microbiota analyses using Qiime, maturity analyses, linear discrimination analyses, and gene expression studies. The Research Associate II, will analyze materials to include those obtained from humans and animals.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. Degree or equivalent in Microbiology, Immunology, Zoology or a relevant science, or a Master's Degree in Microbiology, Immunology, Zoology or a relevant science plus three (3) years of related research experience is required.
  • Demonstrated capacity to network with other teams for collaborative analyses is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bench experience preparing samples for sequencing and extensive mouse work experience is preferred.
  • Work in a germ-free (gnotobiotic) facility is a plus.
  • Experience with cultivation and preservation of anaerobic bacterial cultures is desirable.
  • A background in microbial ecology with extensive experience on microbiota analyses using Qiime, ecological studies, linear discrimination analyses, and quantitative analyses of RNA-based gene expression and DNA copy number is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for microbial ecology experimental procedures focused on the study of the role of animal-microbe interactions and the symbioses between microorganisms and their hosts. Conducts research independently or as assigned specialized research for a particular project.
  • Performs microbiota analyses using Qiime, maturity analyses, linear discrimination analyses, and gene expression studies relating to the investigatory activities of the laboratory.
  • Prepares samples for sequencing and cultivates and preserves anaerobic bacterial cultures in accordance with established laboratory protocols and in compliance with germ-free (gnotobiotic) facility standards.
  • Analyzes materials obtained from humans and animals. Performs experiments with rodents including animal care, behavioral analysis, surgery, dissections, and preparation of tissue for biochemical and histological analysis.
  • Participates in the development of performance standards, selection of methodology and instrumentation and coordination of the analytical, biochemical, physiology and instrumentation functions with the research areas to ensure conformance with the goals and objectives of the department.
