About The Position

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applications for a Research Associate I, working on coral reef ecosystems. The successful applicant will work with a diverse team of scientists, postdocs, and students at NOAA and UM laboratories in Miami, Florida as part of the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory’s (AOML) Coral Program. The successful candidate will play a central role in supporting AOML’s engineering and research efforts by managing the Advanced Design and Manufacturing Lab and leading the design and construction of instrumentation and infrastructure for Coral Program projects. This position will contribute to the development of robotic coral-propagation technologies, experimental aquarium systems, and real-time buoy platforms; assist in the 3D design and fabrication of experimental setups.

Requirements

  • Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree in marine science, engineering, or a related field from an accredited university.
  • They must be highly motivated, organized, and have the ability to adapt to a dynamic lab environment.
  • Strong analytical and laboratory skills are required.
  • Experience with computers, 3D printing, programming, circuitry, and 3D design (CAD) software is required.
  • At least one year of hands-on and directly related research experience (at time of hire) is preferable

Nice To Haves

  • Preference will be given to candidates who possess a close familiarity with coral reef ecosystems and aquarium systems.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Advanced Design and Manufacturing Lab located within AOML, inclusive of 3D printers (SLA, FDM, SLS), laser cutting, and CNC machines
  • Design and build of instrumentation and infrastructure related to AOML Coral Program funded projects, including robotic coral propagation technology, experimental aquarium systems, and real-time buoy networks
  • Assist with 3D design and construction of experimental setups
  • Maintain and augment the Experimental Reef Lab
  • Program laboratory/instrument software interfacing or improvements
  • Work closely with other team members to brainstorm, prototype, and troubleshoot infrastructure projects
