About The Position

Wayne State University is seeking an experienced Research Associate for the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at its Detroit campus. This role provides scientific and technical assistance under the direction of the Principal Investigator, focusing on laboratory-based, clinical, or population science research. The Research Associate will be involved in designing and performing research protocols, either independently or through specialized training, and may assist in writing research protocols and preparing manuscripts. Key responsibilities include conducting laboratory techniques or human subjects research, designing experiments, and recruiting study participants through surveys and interviews. The position ensures compliance with legal, regulatory, and protocol guidelines, and involves communicating research status to the Principal Investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows. The associate is responsible for collecting, logging, evaluating, and analyzing laboratory results, clinical outcomes, or survey data, presenting findings using graphs, charts, or tables, and ensuring data accuracy through proofreading and editing. A significant aspect of the role involves preparing and presenting research results at conferences, summarizing data for peer-reviewed journals, and writing scientific manuscripts. Unique duties include laboratory management, overseeing operations, workflows, and biorepository inventory, as well as managing cohort datasets and advanced data oversight. The Research Associate will have greater involvement in the design, implementation, and independent execution of research protocols, processing and analyzing biological samples while maintaining quality standards, and supporting and coordinating technical staff. Contribution to and/or leadership in scholarly publications and manuscript development is expected. Additionally, the role includes maintaining laboratory work areas, performing routine equipment maintenance, ordering supplies, and ensuring workstation cleanliness and organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field of study.
  • Advanced knowledge, predominantly intellectual in character, in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.
  • Minimum 2 years of job-related experience.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to analyze, summarize, and interpret research findings in reports and communicate results.
  • Knowledge of scientific integrity principles.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment.
  • Microsoft Office software skills.

  • Experience performing basic research techniques.
  • Expertise in specialized areas including andrology, male reproductive biology, epidemiology, epigenetics, next-generation sequencing, and computational biology/bioinformatics.

Responsibilities

  • Provide scientific and technical assistance for laboratory-based, clinical, or population science research under the direction of the Principal Investigator.

  • Fact-check, proofread, and edit research documents for accuracy.
  • Maintain laboratory work areas, including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  • Order and organize required research supplies and records.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the workstation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Oversight of laboratory operations, workflows, and biorepository inventory.
