About The Position

The Van der Heijden Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech in association with the Department of Neuroscience is seeking a highly motivated part time Research Assistant. Led by Dr. Meike van der Heijden, the lab aims to study the development of cerebellar function in health and disease. The lab goals are to understand why perturbations to the cerebellum can lead to neurodevelopmental disorders with a broad range of symptoms and phenotypes. The work is relevant to understanding the pathophysiology of childhood disorders like autism spectrum disorders and pediatric movement disorders including dystonia and ataxia. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable working in a new lab. Experience working in a research laboratory is helpful but not mandatory. The lab requires the candidate to be comfortable with interactions with mice to maintain a successful operation of the research activities. Fundamental interest in mouse genetics and behavior is a necessity. Techniques we use include in vivo electrophysiology, neuroanatomy, computation, and optogenetics. Knowledge of basic computer skills, record keeping and experience with data collection is required. This position also requires storing and filing electronic and paper data as well some basic data analysis and presentation. Some familiarity with the above techniques is a plus. Strong intrapersonal skills and desire and ability to work with different scientists is a must. There is opportunity for the candidate to participate in research publication and attendance at national scientific conferences if able and appropriate. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in lab meetings, analyze data, and assist in the preparation of figures for peer-reviewed publication and presentations. The successful candidate should also be detail oriented and enjoy various working environments.
