About The Position

The Cigliola Laboratory and the Department of Pharmacology invite applications for a Research Assistant position. The Cigliola Lab is dedicated to identifying novel strategies to reverse paralysis after spinal cord injury. We use state-of-the-art genetics, transcriptomics, and in vivo cellular, molecular, and behavioral approaches in zebrafish and mouse models to uncover the innate mechanisms of spinal cord regeneration. This position is in conjunction with the Department of Pharmacology, and the assistant will have shared responsibilities between the laboratory and the department. Key responsibilities include maintenance of the zebrafish colony and support of routine laboratory and departmental operations (placing orders, maintaining inventory, and preparing animal protocols) Specialized training will be provided. The Department of Pharmacology is one of the most distinguished Pharmacology departments in the country. Research interests include seven major areas: signal transduction mechanisms, neuronal communication and synaptic signaling, bioactive lipids, molecular basis of neuropsychiatric disorders, structural biology, drug discovery, and cancer biology. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Genetics, or related field.
  • Previous laboratory experience is required.
  • Organizational skills, attention to details, motivation to learn new techniques, good work ethics.
  • Excellent ability to interpret information and protocol requirements, ability to multitask.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels staff and personnel in the laboratory and beyond.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and basic computer skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with zebrafish husbandry and/or with Vanderbilt University system is preferable.

Responsibilities

  • Zebrafish colony maintenance (husbandry, feeding, tank system monitoring, assistance with writing IACUC protocols).
  • Generation of mutant and transgenic zebrafish lines by microinjection and genotyping.
  • Assistance with ordering lab/department supplies.
  • Assistance with maintaining equipment and inventories.
  • Assistance with compliance for Vanderbilt safety and IACUC policies.
