We are searching for a Research and Development Engineer to join our team located at our East Manufacturing Plant in Jacksonville, IL. The Research and Development Engineer will lead in the design, development, and commercialization of new products, processes, and materials. This role will have the opportunity to influence the business by transforming your own creative ideas into new products or processes for manufacturing extrusion. The R&D Engineer will enjoy providing equipment, process, and materials related technical expertise to the business, while supporting and influencing product sustainability projects. This role will collaborate with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Regulatory, Marketing, and the business team to deliver new technologies that can be seen at all major retail stores. Requirements

  • BS degree in Engineering (Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical preferred).
  • Experience with automation design and integration.
  • Proficient in MS Office with high proficiency in Excel.
  • High degree of creativity; ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Solid communications skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and establish priorities.
  • Basic understanding of 3D drawing software, solid modeling, or heat transfer modeling.
  • Basic understanding of statistical techniques and methods (DOE, SPC, etc).
  • Basic understanding of lean manufacturing techniques and methods.
  • Familiarity with physical and analytical test methods for polymer films and resin is desirable.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Solid project management capabilities, with the ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously from origin through execution.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule during key business deadlines.
  • Must be team-oriented with the ability to work on high collaboration and performance teams.

Nice To Haves

  • MS degree in Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of applicable experience.
  • Proficient in the use of Minitab statistical analysis software
  • Proficient in the use of Solidworks CAD software

Responsibilities

  • Identify and lead projects to support and achieve marketing innovation, material cost saving, and operational efficiency objectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve business objectives.
  • Qualify & commercialize new processes/materials/technologies to improve product quality.
  • Engage with material and equipment suppliers to maintain knowledge of new technologies and identify cost savings opportunities.
  • Support new product development through core activities: Defining product scale up strategies, defining appropriate material formulation/blends, defining equipment and process requirements, preparing trial plans, guiding technicians in preparation and execution of trials, providing testing direction to laboratory personnel, applying statistical analysis techniques, using results to provide recommendations to business development teams.
  • Support operations by providing technical guidance as a subject matter expert.
  • Supervise and direct engineering technicians to accomplish tasks as required.
  • Develop, write, implement, submit and/or present various technical reports or capital requests in support of new product, safety, quality, process improvement, or productivity initiatives.
  • Perform complex activities related to the design, testing, and evaluation of mechanical and electromechanical devices or systems.
  • Apply statistical analysis techniques to trial data and develop key observations and conclusions.
  • Collaborate on improvements to production methods, implementing new production techniques, and determination of manufacturing capacities.
  • Ability to understand control sequences of operations and work directly with electrical engineers and technicians to troubleshoot equipment controls problems and achieve efficient operation of new or modified equipment.
  • Directly manage small to medium sized capital projects up to $500,000
  • Travel to other sites or vendor locations in performance of duties. Travel is project dependent and ranges up to 25%.
