About The Position
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into software development is an actively pursued area as AI applications continue to expand. Our aim is to explore the application of AI in the development and maintenance of community-based, mission-driven, open-source scientific computing software, with a particular emphasis on PETSc—a widely used numerical library for high-performance scientific computation, with a large, active user community. We seek to harness AI to enhance and exploit the PETSc knowledge base. Students involved in this effort will work with mentors to assess requirements, fine-tune large language models (LLMs), design AI assistants and their interfaces, and evaluate their effectiveness and quality.
Requirements
- The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States.
- Applicants must be: Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution. Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or o Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution.
- Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
- Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident at the time of application.
- If accepting an offer, must pass a screening drug test.
