Research Aide - XSD - Gulick, Brian - 4.16.26

Argonne National LaboratoryLemont, IL

About The Position

Brian’s project consists of advancing technical capabilities on beamline 16BMB with two main objectives. The first objective is to enhance the maximum temperature range for high-pressure ultrasonic measurements in a large volume press. This involves developing, testing, and validating an improved cooling system for anvils to allow higher sample temperatures (up to 1000 deg C) while keeping the transducer epoxy below 200 deg C. This enhancement will benefit Brian’s PhD project on HP-HT ultrasound measurements of transition metals and expand the available PT phase space for future users. The second objective is to complete an initial deployment of experimental workflows using Bluesky at 16BMB. This internship aims to catalyze the implementation of Bluesky, involving the automation of common beamline procedures and experimental workflows.

Requirements

  • The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States
  • Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution
  • Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution
  • Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins
  • Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • If accepting an offer, candidates may be required to complete pre-employment drug testing based on appointment length
  • Must complete a satisfactory background check
  • Ability to obtain a government access authorization that involves additional background check requirements

Responsibilities

  • Carefully define several common beamline procedures and experimental workflows to automate
  • Convert common, simple tasks into parameterized Python functions
  • Combine multiple tasks to create reusable Bluesky plans for common procedures (e.g., sample alignment, 1D scans, etc.)
  • Determine what metadata needs to be recorded
  • Ensure standard metadata is attached to collected data in an organized, repeatable, and useful fashion
  • Perform initial testing of the automated workflows using simulated motors and detectors
  • Identify bugs and potential safety pitfalls
  • Validate the automated workflows through real-time testing on the beamline
  • Perform ultrasonic measurements related to PhD thesis work using Bluesky to automate sample alignment and data collection at various PT conditions
