About The Position

The Estes Park (Colo.) Trail-Gazette is looking for an experienced and resourceful journalist to cover this Colorado town, Rocky Mountain National Park, and nearby mountain communities including Allenspark, Glen Haven, Drake and Pinewood Springs. This reporter will focus on Estes Park town government, schools, police and fire, visitor’s bureau, business organizations and all matters of community interest, while dedicating about 10% of their time to coverage of the national park, including tourism, the environment and wildlife, and the effect of federal government policy on the park. Must be flexible to work evenings, weekends and/or holiday's as well as odd hours if necessary/news requires and live in the area/county or be willing to relocate (no relocation assistance offered)

Requirements

  • Degree in journalism, communication or equivalent experience
  • News reporting and writing, shooting video, using social media, creating enterprising content
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong reporting, writing, organizational and story structure skills
  • Understands imperatives of emerging and existing platforms, including web, mobile and print
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation

Nice To Haves

  • Experience at a daily newspaper or online news outlet preferred

Responsibilities

  • Help cultivate a strong audience, both online and in the community with your mastery of AP style
  • Be a strong storyteller and will possess a unique journalistic voice
  • Develop a social media presence as the go-to person for public safety news, and will write about that news both in daily and enterprise story format
  • Cultivate fresh ideas to bring to the Trail-Gazette using your social media and search-engine optimization
  • Work to meet regular production deadlines
  • Utilize and experiment with new digital tools and platforms
  • Contribute to growing our digital audience with daily postings online, on social media, etc.
  • Foster a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration
  • Work weekends and holidays on a rotational basis as well as odd hours if necessary/news requires (Town Board meets on Tuesday evenings.)
