About The Position

The Morning Call is seeking an ambitious general assignment reporter to cover the fast-growing and diverse Lehigh County region of eastern Pennsylvania. This person will juggle breaking and trending news with enterprise pieces, covering a range of topics from development and quality of life to public safety to local government accountability. We are looking for someone scrappy who can break news, write authoritatively and craft stories that our readers can’t get anywhere else in a highly competitive media market. If you’re looking to make your mark, this is the position for you. The Morning Call is known for its outstanding journalism, and our journalists have gone on to work for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, and other high-profile news organizations. The position is remote but must be local to the Lehigh Valley region.

Requirements

College degree or equivalent experience
Strong digital and social media skills, with an understanding of SEO and metrics
Solid news judgment. Strong writing, grammar, AP style and communication skills
Capable of working both independently and within a team
Flexibility to work occasional night and weekend shifts
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation
Must be available for shift work.
May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
A full pre-employment background check and MVR will be conducted as part of the selection process.
Must be willing to submit and pass the necessary required checks
Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, training sessions, and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed

Nice To Haves

Experience working for a daily newspaper is highly preferred
Ability to speak and conduct interviews in Spanish is a plus

Responsibilities

Create clear, concise and engaging news stories and deliver on time with minimal to moderate supervision and editing
Be fast and accurate: Report and write quickly and effectively to break news online. Follow up when appropriate with more in-depth pieces
Develop story ideas and contribute to editorial planning
Cultivate and maintain relationships with key sources
Use creative storytelling to present stories in unique ways that attract readers, including explainers, Q&As, lists, data visualizations, etc
Utilize metrics to evaluate what content is engaging readers and subscribers
Use SEO best practices to ensure readers are finding your stories via Search
Create visual assignments, taking your own photos and video as needed
Maintain an active social media presence to develop sources, find story ideas and promote your content
Shift gears as needed, juggling short-term and long-term assignments simultaneously
