About The Position

The WNYC/Gothamist newsroom strives to make the New York/New Jersey region work for the people who live here, and has ambitious goals to reach new, diverse audiences through impactful, audience-focused journalism. Do you love telling people about the latest film, music, art, and food that’s capturing the city’s attention? Do you love breaking down the big ideas that New Yorkers are talking about now? Do you love capturing the joy and curiosity that makes the city so great? We are looking for a versatile reporter to cover the city’s arts and culture scene across audio and digital platforms. The ideal candidate can report on a wide range of topics including art, food, film, fashion, and music, among others. This reporter will generate scoops and exclusives, while balancing bigger trend stories, profiles, event guides, news stories, and other features. The right candidate holds themselves to the highest standard of journalistic excellence. They thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and love the ever-changing nature of news. They are comfortable writing for newsletters and social media, as well as appearing on radio and podcasts.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of journalism experience, with a demonstrated interest in culture stories.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the complex cultural landscape of New York City.
  • Aptitude for and comfort with using a broad range of media, including audio and text.
  • Ability to move ideas quickly from concept to completion.
  • Ability to identify and pursue stories that will engage readers and listeners.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to sharpen or rewrite copy under deadline pressure.
  • Sophisticated communication skills, including oral, written, and public speaking.
  • Deep commitment to accurate, ethical journalism; and impeccable journalistic integrity and judgment.
  • Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking.
  • Ability to manage several story assignments concurrently.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of reporting
  • The ability to work effectively and/or interact with the public and with other staff at New York Public Radio

Responsibilities

  • Report and produce stories for both text and audio platforms that are clear, thorough, fair, timely, culturally relevant, and accurate.
  • Conceive of, source, and pitch stories on a variety of topics that will engage listeners and readers.
  • Consistently meet deadlines on daily news while balancing enterprise stories.
  • Develop sources that lead to scoops our audience can’t get elsewhere.
  • Effectively coordinate with other editors and the newsroom’s audience team to maximize reach across our platforms.
  • Work in-person at New York Public Radio’s office in Lower Manhattan and be available to be deployed in the field whenever necessary.
